I telephoned Dr. Loughry on August 18 and found him to be very opinionated regarding the types of waste he would tolerate in a land fill. He insisted he had to have research data on the behavior of askarels on the various Pennsylvania soils over long periods of time. I, therefore, did not succeed in convincing him that disposal in a landfill was safe since I could only refer to generalities. He did soften his position somewhat by stating that he understood you wished to dispose of liquid waste rather than solid waste. I asoured him this was not your in tent. Perhaps you can pursue thio opportunity. The laboratory information I was waiting for relates to a study made by Monsanto in the Gainesville, Florida area in 1938- Aroclor 1242 was one of several materials applied to soil in holes 15" in diameter and 16" deep. The walls were sprayed with a solution of Aroclor 1242 and the soil was replaced with each layer sprayed with additional Aroclor 1242, When the hole was completely filled, the remaining solution was poured on top. A total of 4 ounces of Aroclor was applied. We have COMPANY CONFIDENTIAL TRAN 039AA7 HARTOLDMON0024848 Kr. P. R. Viland 2 October 1, 1970 estimated that the Aroclor content was about 2200 ppm, In 1969, vc secured samples from the Aroclor 12*12 hole at 6", 6-16" and 16-2G" from the top, Aroolor was pres ent in these quantities 1 Probe Depth ppm Aroclor 12^2 6 -JLU l6"-2(Sn 2820 This data would indicate that after 30 years the Aroolor has not migrated to any significant degree. I havo not shared this information with Dr. Loughry since he scorned to Indicate that studies with soils from other states would not be indicative of what would happen in Pennsylvanla. It lo my opinion that only a soil chemist familiar with Pennsylvania will be able to communicate with Dr. Loughry. Oary Wilburn was considering approaching a consultant at VPI. Porhaps he could help.
