To sianarlsa our discussion I nay state that in uy opinion suoh an investigation should inolude (1) an inspection of anufaoturlng prooesses at the new plant in Berlin, Hew Jersey. (2) a study of the behavior of K-Lo dust In atoospheric suspension including suoh features as the effect Of tumidity, tendency to flocculate and settle, the relative proportion# of fibre# and particles in air floated duet, etc., and (3) dally exposure of a large nunber of experimental animals to high concentration# of duet of this naterlal to determine first, whether it oan be Inhaled Into the lungs In significant quantities and second, whether it will produce serious pathologloal reaotlon. On investigation of our situation here I believe we will be in a position to etart suoh a study about January 1, 1945. By that tlaa we hope to have the necessary number of guinea pigs and white rate available, for the Moment our supply is very limited. Our engineer will plan to visit Berlin, Hew Jersey as soon aa hie schedule will permit and Z also shall expeot to do so when I am in the vlalnlty which should not be too far distant. Ve will want to oolleot several hundred pounds of duet in order to Insure material of uniform oomposltlon for the entire experiment. Probably as you sug gest duet from the oolleotor system in your faotory would be satisfactory for the purpose unless It sbould be grossly contaminated with other dust. The exact amount that we shall need would have to be determined after ve experiment with it to dleoover bow. readily it will produce a dust cloud in our experimental room. Z would suggest that you send us about ten pounds of oolleotor duet for preliminary investigation. Ve should contemplate exposing at least 190 guinea pigs, 50 white rats and perhaps 10 rabbits 8 hours dally 6 days a week over a period of one or two year*. The nature of the results would determine the duration of the experiment.
