He also has a teaching and researcn connection wftli a university, which I have not as yet identified. Attached is some.background data -from American Men and Women of Science, 12th Physical and Biological .Edition. J have made a few inquiries to try to get further information on Schepers1 current research, tenets, and recent consulting activity without significant results. It is difficult to get this type of data while remaining anonymous. Amplification of Previous Comments At the Talc Symposium, Schepers asked several questions of other speakers. He was rather hostile in questioning Selikoff's people and during his presentation, they replied in kind. Schepers presentation consisted of many slides of lung tissue as well as the results of some animal experiments he had conducted in past years. He indicated that his animal experiments led him to believe that talc and tremolite are not injurious. He also stated that in many years of searching, he has never found a case of fibrosis in a~talc/tremolite exposure. In every case refered to him as such, he has discovered a chrysotile or amosite exposure. His slides of lung tissue contrasted chrysotile caused rferruyeuuus bodies {fron xontaining protein surrounding the fiber), which were dead protein, with tremolite or^fibrous talc bodies in which the protein remains alive. The ferrogenous body usually is incorporated in the lung tissue resulting in formation of fibrous tissue. With talc/ tremolite,- the fiber remains free in the lung with phagacites surrounding it. It is a storage disease and eventually will clear after exposure ceases. This is not the case with chrysotile where the damage is permanent. Schepers believes that a study of a pure tremolite exposure or tremolite with an inert substance other than talc could resolve many questions. He also indicated a difficulty in obtaining good samples of fibrous tremolite for use in experimentation. I didn't volunteer any.
