RT-530-D, RT-436-D, RT-135-P
<
A process 0000007 study of the toluidioo maroon (meta-nitropara-toluidine --* "Haphthanil" BS) ana undertaken in the laboratory* RT-530-D, BT-436-D and BT-135-P (the pulp of RT-436-D) were studied in two ways; (1) ingredient cost economy and (2) making coat reductions
lay increased batch size*
The following new processes were written for the three formulas and were submitted to the plant on a trial basis.
K-2399 (BT-530-D) K-2400 (RT-436-D)
K-2401 (RT-135-P)
In all cases the new procedures give identical results with the
present standards with respect to masstone and extension in lacquer, overstrlpe bleed, and,in the ease of HT-530-D, dispersion equal to standard by a special test*
K-2399 differs from K-2286 in the following ways;
1. 50% reduction in dlazo volume*
2. 20# reduction in ooupling volume.
3* 50# Increase in batch size. 4. 26# reduction in hydrochloric acid In tha
dlazo with a corresponding cut in sodium carbonate*
K-2400 and K-2401 differ from K-1187 and K-1583 respectively in the following ways.
1* 50# reduction in dlazo volume,
2* 45# reduction in development volume* 3* 37# increase in batch size, 4. 5# cut in excess H-B8 5. 26# reduction in hydrochloric acid in dlazo
with corresponding out in alkali*
The goal yield on K-2399 is 96^1 as i*9 964i anhydrous/!1
for a 2*0 mol coupling* K-2400 and K-2401 have goal yield of
1004*5? *as is*, 997? anhydrous for 2.22 mol couplings*
"
Prom a cost standpoint, based on the forecast for 1948 on July 29. 1947* a total ingredients cost saving for all three codes amounted to approximately $12,500. If we estimate another 5 cents a pound on making costs due to increased batch size, this would add another $20,000.

DISCUSSIOHt
A limited variable study was made as it was desired that
no properties be affected which might require durability data*
In all three formulas the volume of the dlazo wgs out 50% and the hydrochloric acid reduced 0.8 mol to correspond to the RT-386-D
dlazo formula* Ho further variable study was made on the volume or the acid. A corresponding cut in soda ash in RT-530-D and
caustic soda in RT-436-D and RT-135-P was made to compensate for
the aeid reduction*
On RT-530-B a 20$ coupling volume out was possible but a
45$ out caused the product to be dark and dull* Ho change was made in RT-436-D and RT-135-P volumes.
On RT-436-D and Rf-135-P, the Haphthanil BS was adjusted to equal the amount in RT-530-0 which represented a 5% reduction. It was shown that whan 10$ of the ``Haphthanil" BS was substituted by beta-oxy-naphtholc acid and the RT-530-D solution method used, a product was obtained equal to RT-436-D in color, bleed and durability. It was felt that It was too groat a change and might altar the properties, although further savings would have been realized*
The dilution period prior to the development in RT-436-D was eliminated and reduced the volume by 45$. Ho intermediary stop was tried* During all of the work on RT-436-D and RT-135-P no Pig ment Green B was used* Ihe products obtained were almost equal to the standard and this agent might possibly be eliminated.
