* >* I GHQ November 22, 1971 PLAINTIFF'S EXHIBIT CAP-1606 TO: J-M ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH TASK FORCE AIA/NA BOARD OF DIRECTORS and ADMINISTRATIVE SUB-COMMITTEE UPDATE ON VARIOUS FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ACTIVITIES 1) Attached is a copy of the reply sent to the AFL-CIO by George C. Guenther, Assistant Secretary of Labor, in' response to the AFL-CIO's demand for emergency occupational standards on asbestos. ' 2) Latest information from our Washington sources is that publication of the Federal EPA emission standards on * asbestos will be delayed for another 2-3 weeks (the scheduled publication date, as you recall, was September 27). Our sources tell us that the problem is logistical, and that there are no longer -any problems remaining with the content of the Asbestos regulations. Final publication go-ahead from EPA chief Ruckelshaus is expected before the end of November. Logistical problems involved, in the printing of the regulations will delay the publication in the Federal Register for another week .or so after that. Our best information is that the public hearings will not be held until after the first of the year. 3) Our Washington sources also inform us that the Toxic Substances Control Act (S-1478) will probably be installed in the Senate Commerce Committee for the rest of the Congressional session. The House has yet to take any action on the bill. 4) Attached you will find a copy of the recently printed booklet version of the National Academy of Sciences document on asbestos.
