INDUSTRIAL SAFETY EQUIPMENT ASSOCIATION 1901 North Moore Street Arlington, Virginia 22209 Aluminum Committee Meeting Safety Wearing Apparel Group March 6, 1978 Telephone Conference Call MINUTES A conference call meeting of the Aluminum Committee, Safety Wearing Apparel Group, Industrial Safety Equipment Association, was held on March 6, 197.8. The following participated: C. L. Grossman B. L. Shepard G. W. Herzberger, Jr. D. E. Houston R. Sager' H. L. Wheeler L. A. Moradian F. E. Wilchex, Jr. A-Best Products Company Gentex Corporation Safety Clothing & Equipment Co. Safety First- Industries, Inc. The Sager Glove Corporation Wheeler Protective Apparel, Inc. ISEA Counsel ISEA Executive Director Chairman Sager opened the conference by reporting that Mr. Shepard has pre pared the frames for the testing of sample fabrics for exposure to molten aluminum. He stated that five pieces of fabric, for both .primary and secon dary protection, wohLd be tested, with each piece measuring 12" -X 22". Mr. Sager also indicated that he has secured a plastic material to place behind the fabric for the testing. Chairman Sager also indicated that a Mr. Ebilip James of Inland Steel Com pany, an expert on testing molten metals, might be available on a fee basis to serve as a consultant for this project. Following discussion of this subject, it was recommended that Mr. James not be used -as a consultant for the initial testing and that, possibly, he could be helpful after fabrics are selected which show the most promise for offering protection against mol ten aluminum. In the meantime, it was suggested that Mr. Sager determine the availability of Mr. James for the second phase of this project. Consideration was then given to the procedure for collecting the sample fab rics for testing. It was decided each member of the Committee would submit a list of possible fabrics to be submitted to Mr. Sager before the end of this week. Mr. Sager will review the lists and eliminate an duplications. Committee members will then submit their samples to the ISEA office, to ar rive no later than the end of March. Each member' of the Committee, agreed to send the Executive Director a description of all samples to be submitted, following which, the ISEA office will code the samples prior to submitting these to the testing laboratory. The Executive Director reported that he had a telephone conversation earlier today with Mr. Epstein of The Aluminum Association, who indicated the test ing project should be approved.within the next few weeks, and that the test ing would take place at either Frederick, Maryland; Richmond, Virginia; or DKS 262 "* 2- - St. Louis, Missouri. A letter confirming arrangements will be forthcoming from The Aluminum Association. It was noted that several members of the Safety Wearing- Apparel Group who ' are not part of this committee may have fabrics that they would like to have tested. Related to this, Mr. Sager indicated he would invite Fyrepel and Steel Grip to submit fabrics. It was felt .these were the only other firms who might have products which would be used in the aluminum industry. Mr. Sager also stated that he has been in touch with DuPont, who has agreed to submit samples, and-he will also contact again Cotton, Inc., to determine whether"they would be interested in participating. A general discussion followed on types of fabrics to submit for this program. The question was raised as to whether molten aluminum would stick on alumi nized fabric. Members indicated they were'not sure of the answer to this question, and it was recommended that fabrics of this type be submitted to determine their effectiveness. It was also agreed to try neoprene and other coated fabrics. Mr. Sager also volunteered to laminate a variety of fabrics for any members interested. Mr. Sager indicated that Mr. Sasser of Reynolds Metals had extended an invi tation to interested members of the Committee to visit the Reynolds facility in Massena, New York. Mr. Shepard volunteered to represent the Committee through a visitation to this facility, and indicated he would attempt to take some -pictures and prepare a report on the use of safety wearing apparel at this plant.
