PLAINTIFF'S EXHIBIT RECOMMENDED WORKPRACTICES (OP-III Kerosene Furnace Deposits) Excessive employee exposure to kerosene furnace coke deposits may result in chemical skin burns and is to be minimized as far as practical by the following workpractices. PROTECTIVE CLOTHING Employees are to be supplied and wear clean protective coveralls and gloves on each shift. Shirt sleeves are to be taped to gloves. Contaminated coveralls are to be laundered or otherwise disposed of by Shell. Goggles or full face respirator are to be worn at all times while working with coke deposits. Employees are to use protective skin cream on forearms, neck and face. This is water soluble and must be replaced after each washing. Protective cream should only be applied to clean skin. (Marion 222TM Barrier Cream) WASHING - PERSONAL HYGIENE The probability of receiving a burn from the coke deposit increases where contact with the skin is prolonged. There fore employees are to wash off visible skin contamination at breaks; once at mid-morning, lunch and mid-afternoon is suggested. All employees must wash up before eating and at the end of the workshift. A wash through with soap and disposable towels is to be provided at the work site. HEAT STRESS e The use of total protective clothing as recommended may result in heat stress or heat fatigue. Symptoms of heat stress include dizziness and nausea. To minimize the risk of heat stress: A source of cool water should continue to be made available. A portable man-cooling fan should be used to provide additional ventilation. The fan should be located so as to avoid creat ing airborne coke deposits. DUS1EXP0SURE Employees involved in dust generating activities such as chipping or shoveling deposits are to wear disposable paper dust respirators, or full face air purifying respirators equipped with dust filters. GENERAL Employees with potential exposure to furnace deposits are to be advised of the need to strictly follow these workpractices and to promptly report any sensation of skin burning to their supervisor. These lines should be cold cut. II. EP One small portion of the plant contains a small amount of tars. This material should be handled without skin contact. If there is skin contact, the effected area should be washed with soap before leaving the job site. III.PDU The PDU building contains some drums of Shell product. All drums should be removed from the building before the dismantling begins. IV. IPA No special problem except some of this equipment has contained Sulfuric Acid. V. AA Respirators may be required if burning is done on contaminated metal. VI. "G" - 400-450-500 No special problem. VII. "G" 300 HTH Column packing may contain caustic. Goggles must be worn. VIII. "G" EC2 Crude unit contains some contaminated ferric chloride. Special care should be used to protect skin and eyes. IX. Aromatics No special protection needed. Should avoid skin contact. Should wash with soap prior to leaving job site. XIII. Power Plant I All work inside boiler building. Compressor building and generator room should be done in controlled coveralls. Provisions must be made for a place to change from street clothes to coveralls. All coveralls must be handled per OSHA standard for asbestos. Building should be roped off with proper asbestos signs. No eating, smoking or drinking in the building or outside the building in the work area. XIV. Lube Pilot Plant Phenol containing equipment should be removed from the building and completely decontaminated before leaving the Complex. All phenol should be cleared before turning equipment over to the contractor. XV. Gas Recovery No special protection needed. NOTE: All asbestos must be handled according to Safety Order S-35 and the OSHA Asbestos Standard. Special attention to DPMC Work Practices found on pg. 3 & 4 of S-35, August 14, 1978.
