I had planned to compile all of the Indian Orchard department codes since 1972 into one list and to ask you to add these codes to the appropriate occupational exposure categories that were created for the original Indian Orchard cohort mortality study. However, after reviewing all of the information that I had, I realized that I needed more information before I could accomplish my original goal. Please allow me to explain. / As I discussed with you last week, Gary Marsh needs someone at the Indian Orchard plant to assign the five-digit department codes, that have been in existence since 1972, to the 21 occupational exposure categories that were developed in the late 1970's. It is my understanding that Linda Knowles and/or Tina Winfield created the occupational exposure categories for Gary Marsh's earlier study. At first, I thought that all you would have to do is take the Indian Orchard MEHI Work Area ID table and determine where all five-digit department codes should be placed with respect to the 21 occupational exposure categories. However, I noticed that there were some five-digit department codes on the lists from Dr. Marsh that were not in the Springfield or Indian Orchard MEHI Work Area ID table. I can only conclude at this time that there are different codes in the MEHI Work Area ID table for the department codes used by the personnel/payroll department at Indian Orchard. If this is the true, then I suggest that we only use the department codes that are on Dr. Marsh's lists. Therefore, I have enclosed the following information: - letter dated March 12, 1986 from Gary Marsh to William Gaffey - see pages 4 and 5, Attachments 2 and 3 (which contain some of the five-digit department codes that need to be added to the occupational exposure categories), and Attachment 4 (which represents the occupational exposure categories that were developed earlier for Dr. Marsh) IN-10-M (REV. 10/83) RSV0027064 - letter dated July 22, 1986 from Michele LaValley to Terry Leet - see the attachment (which contains some additional five-digit department codes that should be added to the occupational exposure categories) - reprint of Dr. Marsh's study report titled "Mortality Among Workers From a Plastics Producing Plant: A Matched Case-Control Study Nested in a Retrospective Cohort Study" - see page 224 (which provides more detail concerning the occupational exposure categories) Hopefully, Tina Winfield will be able to help you, or will give you sufficient information that will enable you to complete this task. If not, please do not hesitate to contact either Joe Wolfsberger or me. Finally, Dr. Marsh has asked me to provide him with a list of specific chemical exposures that we would like for him to consider when he analyzes the mortality data. For example, we would like Dr. Marsh to update the earlier analysis involving Indian Orchard employees who were potentially exposed to formaldehyde. Other chemical exposures on our "wish list" include acrylonitrile, styrene, and vinyl chloride. In each case, we need to give Dr. Marsh a list of departments and/or jobs and the time period(s) when the employees may have been exposed to each of these chemicals. (A list of departments and time periods concerning formaldehyde exposure that was developed for an earlier PMR study by Dr. Marsh is included in Attachment 5 of the letter dated March 12, 1986 from Gary Marsh to William Gaffey. However, this list may need to be updated.) Of course, if there are any other chemicals exposures that you would like Dr. Marsh to consider, please add it to the above list. If there is anything I can help you do to complete this task, please do not hesitate to contact me. Furthermore, if you think it will be a few weeks before you can even begin this task, please call me and I will let Dr. Marsh know when we anticipate to give him the information that he has requested. /!
