only approximate. At auch tim e, when one ia able to synthesize the individual PCS components commonly found in the envirorment and id e n tify
them in terma o f individual peaks, then the eatim ation remains, as stated, a relative concentration.
However, fox' moat b io lo g ic a l assessment work, the correct order o f magnitude and accurate r e la tiv e amounts of PCS provide the req uisite in formation for tnia purpose.
H I . Contaminants. Im pu rities. or Other Chemical Moieties in FCBs
In the analysis of the polychlorinated biphenyls, one encounters a problem sim ilar to that of the polychl or phenols ana 2 ,li,5 -T in that certain contaminants or Impurities p r e v a il. These im purities arise from the basic sta rtin g m aterials or compounds used in the synthesis and also Aren the pro
cessing conditions used in the chlorination procedures. In th is respect,
the series o f confounds Id e n tifie d through (C and mass spectrometry are semewhat sim ilar in nature to the spectrum of dioxins found in working with chlorinated phenols, hoxachlorophene, 2 ,li,5-T and related synthetic organic
chemicals.
I t has been noted in the bioassay of various Arodors for to sd eity, usu ally testin g on chickens, that there was a variance in tosdclty o f cer ta in FCB preparations. Since the occurrence of lesions resembled those of
chick edema in birds fed PCB, th is pranpted a comparative study between three confounds, Phenoclor DP6, Clophen A60, and Aroclor 1260 by 7os et a l
In 1970 (2b). In th is study, the s p e c ific PCBs were fraction ated , analyzed, and bioassayed using the chick embryo assay.
These studies revealed the presence of certain polar conpounas which
are present as Impurities in the various FCBs and thus explain ihs variance i n to x ic ity o f certain commercial PCB preparations. In Table 2 some o f the
retentions and mass spectrcmatric data of some of the peaks id en tify in g the presence o f some dibenzofurans; chlorinated napthdenes, and associated chlorinated biphenyls are indicated, proving the presence o f im purities.
