MONTHLY HIGHLIGHT REPORT ~ AOGUST 1971 RESEARCH t DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS DIVISION I. INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS (South Bound Brook) A. FELT AND PAPERS SECRET - C01 IPANY CONFIDENTIAL PLAINTIFF'S EXHIBIT GF-1427 McCord Corp. has approved Erie's GN-705 standard acrylonitrile asbestos gasketing sheet and they have expressed an interest in several GAF-modified, latex binder products. B. AUTOMOTIVE Molded Mastic The Ford, wheelhouse cover, slush casting process has been started up and production of molded parts is underway. Work is concentrating on lowering the cost of packaging which is temporarily employing shaped, molded foam for support. Carpet Underlay A formulation and the processing cycles for preparing molded carpet, sound-deadening, underlay mastic has been completed in the laboratory. Samples have been prepared for Fisher Body based on amorphous poly propylene binder and these are undergoing automotive sound tests. C. THERMAL INSULATION Test installations of non-asbestos Calsilite have been completed at GAF Binghamton, Johnson City and Linden plants. Work on this project has been suspended until a final decision on the future of the Calsilite operation is reached. Data was furnished to the Naval Bureau of Medicine showing a very favorable analysis of available crystalline silica. They expressed considerable interest in continuing the evaluation of the asbestosfree insulation. II. MINERAL PRODUCTS (Hagerstown) A. RAW MATERIALS AND NEW FORMULATIONS The less expensive, stearic acid/aluminum chloride/RG-100 granule, aftercoater, applied in plant tests, is superior to the current silicone treatment for imparting water repellency and increasing wet adhesion. Sooting in the severe laboratory test, however, is slightly inferior. The final sooting tendency of the system will be judged on weathering data obtained from field exposures in industrial atmospheres. Samples with coating formulations matching six different new colors requested hy Johns-Manville were prepared for use by their Design Department. MICH08522
