Dr. Cralley gave a most interesting report bn his recent trip to France at which time he attended the Congress on Asbestosis. The Congress was sponsored by all Asbestos Producers in France and there, was representation from eight or nine countries. During the general session there were three papers given on the medical check of employees. Of most interest was the report stating previous to 1930 there were 7 to 10 times the occurrence of lung cancer in Asbestos workers vs the General Public and from 1930, after dust control systems were installed in plants, the occurrence was less than the General Public. In both case studies approximately 113 persons were checked. The Congress indicated the Rayco dust monitoring unit is a very good one. .The reason it i3 a good unit is it can be set to read dust eountB in specified fibre lengths; .5 microns, .6-microns or 1 micron. The cost of this unit is approximately $12,000. pPflHlWl-US* Pralley presented a progress report on the En vironmental Studies made by his group in U.S. plants. As of this date, they have been to six plants and have taken 1500 to 2000 samples. Depending on plant size the group will complete one or two plants every three months. Air Hygiene & Mgm Coramittee -2- June 4, 1964 Dr. Cralley displayed a series of charts showing dust concentrations from thirty years ago vs the current studies. The charts are very encouraging as in every operation - Preparing through Weaving - a significant reduction in dust concentration has been found. Dr. Cralley stated he will give us a progress report from time to time and when he feels sufficient data is available a complete report will be issued on the Survey. Dust Monitoring Equipment Mr. Horst Blume and Dr. Volinsky demonstrated the? SinclairPhoenix Dust and Smoke Photometer. Their address is: Phoenix Precision Instrument Co. 3803-05 N. USA Area Code 215 BA-8-7417 ' Cable: PP1C0 The demonstration was very interesting and the Air Hygiene Committee feels the unit has a place in the program of dust controls. The'unit through the recorder will give a continuing permanent record of dust concentration in an area rather than a reading just during the time of sampling as our present method does. Before any firm recommendations can be made on this unit correlation between the standard test results and the Sinclair . Phoenix unit would have to be checked. Pamphlets describing the unit were distributed and we expect to have some comments on it by the next ATI meeting. The price of the unit is approximately $2500 plus $700 for the recorder. The Committee expressed their thanks to Mr. Blume and Dr. Volinsky - for the fins demonstration and also to Hans Walter for suggesting we invite Mr. Blume and Dr. Volinsky to the ATI meeting. ~ Asbestosis Research Council (England) Reports received"from S. Every Committee meuber has a copy of each * paper and will keep them on file for future reference. - The Committee agrees that the ATI should encourage all persons . studying the effect of Asbestosis on Health to forward the jpers to the ATI for our reference. The most practical method is the membrane filter devise. The most accurate but least practical methods are the thermal a"d electrostatic precipitation. The ' Konimeter and Impinger methods are unreliable. Currently the value of the Tyndallometer and photoelectric methods are being explored." '.
