One sample was taken for each job classification. The UCL #2, radial drill, nipple lathe, perforater drill, K & C lathe and molding swing saw, were not in operation during-!:Kef survey, therefore, samples could not be taken for these operations-'....... As can be seen from the sample results presented in the Results section, all the exposure levels were within OSHA 8-hour permissible exposure limit of 2 fibers per cubic centimeter of air. It should be noted that OSHA has issued an emergency temporary standard on asbestos which lowered the permissible exposure limit to 0.5 fibers per cubic centimeter. The emergency rulemaking was chal lenged in court by the Asbestos Information Association which obtained a stay on the implementation of the rule pending judicial review. The exposure'levels were also within the proposed emergency standard for asbestos. There were three samples which were so heavily laden with particulate matter that some fibers could have been obscured during count. Therefore, the reported results may be low. In order to obtain more accurate exposure levels, more 'samples with~sTTorter duration on each sample should oe taken at tnese locations. -2- D 004885 J-M Manufacturing Company, Inc. To: E. E. Burnett Subject: YOUR LETTER OF JULY 5, 1983 internal Correspondence Date: August 11, 1983 Asbestos related lung disease is certainly a problem that we are all concerned with, especially as it relates to cigarette smokers exposed to asbestos fibers in the work place. In 1976 the Denison Plant instituted a multi-phase no-smoking program. The end result was to eliminate smoking anywhere on company property. The local union, by a written grievance, challenged the validity of our no-smoking policy. This dispute eventually ended in arbitration before David H. Brown, Arbitrator. On December 6, 1978, Mr. Brown rendered his decision in favor of the Union. As a result of his decision, the company is required to allow smoking in certain areas of the plant. In addition to the above mentioned arbitration case, our union contract contains certain restrictive language that would prevent us from transferring smokers to non-asbestos areas if they had seniority and qualifications to remain on their present jobs.
