The thickness and diameter of the diaphragm plate were increased to fill up the deal apace and to minimize the slack. These modifications improved the pump performance by approximately 8 per cent. The pump performance as it now stands is: 0.30 cfm against a resistance of 5 inches of water and 0.22 cfm against a resistance of 15 inches of water. A test run (Ho. 58) was made at the Power Plant investigating the performance of the new elutriator. The elutriatar was designed to remove all particles greater than 25 microns in size having a specific gravity of 2. In this first test run, 83 per cent of the total material was collected in the elutriator. Microscopic examinations of the separate fractions showed that the elutriator fractions ranged from 150 to 950 microns in size and the fraction passing the elutriator, 50 microns and less. Dr. Braun Joined the Foundation on February 1 and was introduced to Institute personnel and facilities.
