PERSONAL MONITORING RESULTS FOR ASBESTOS
The results of the personal monitor worn by Ray Bowers while bagging and stripping a reactor in 658 Building are as follows:
Master Number
27886
Operation
Bagging and stripping asbestos insulation in 658 Building*
Date 10/23/78
IHG Wearing respirator during operation
Time (min.) 24.8
Asbestos fibers/cc
0.65
2.0
The results above indicate that no overexposure would have occurred even without the use of respirator protection. The good use of controls such as water, roping off the area, disposing in plastic bags and posting of warning signs should be commended. The only additional suggestion would be the use of rubber boots during asbestos demolition projects.

An industrial hygiene survey was conducted at South Power,
500 Building, to evaluate employee's exposures to asbestos fibers during the application of asbestos insulating blankets to a large steam operated turbine generator. A personnel breathing zone sample of the "B" maintenance man was col lected with a battery operated pump with a calibrated air flowrate of 1.0 Lpm when connected to an inline 47 mm filter holder containing a 0.8 micron Type AA Millipore filter. An area sample was collected on top of the generator employing the above collection system at 20 Lpm. Asbestos fibers on the filter greater than 5 microns in length were counted using phase contrast microscopy according to the method of Bayer and Zumwalde, US. Public Health Service.
