Wagner, Ethyl Corporation, 977 West Sixth Street, Los Angeles, California * Dear Sant Harry Haley handed me your letter of May 20, with Mr. Sievert's confidential letter attached, concerning a report given him verbally by Mr. George Herman, Terminal Manager of Tidewater Associated. I have not seen Dr. Schradin for a day or two, and I believe he is in California or on his way there at present. However, I think there is nothing he can do about this matter. This type of thing is bound to happen. Whenever a man dies suddenly, his family considers every possible source of diffi culty, and there is certain to be some apprehension in the case of a man who has worked with dangerous materials. There is no relationship between lead absorption and heart disease, but it is scarcely to be supposed that laymen would consider this fact. If Dr. Schradin should find it convenient to see and talk with Mr. Herman, it might be of some help, but I would not advise his going out of the way to do so, since this is obviously an unrelated and unimportant matter. Herman - Tidewater DATE May 18, 1943 PERSONAL AND CONFIDENTIAL Dear San: While in Coalinga last week, I contacted Mr* Geo. E. Herman, Terminal Manager, of Tidewater Associated Oil Company. Among other things he brought up a subject that he had been wanting to tell personally to someone from the Ethyl Corporation. He did not want to write about it as it then would go into company records ,but he did want to "get it off his chest". One of their employees, diedsuddenly last Oct. 14, 1942 of heart trouble. Mrs. some- time l^er, had stated to Mr. Herman that she felt " that Mr. HBfchad never been right since he had been leading gasoline". Mr. Herman said that she was not beligerent about it but that since she had made the above statement he felt that he should bring it to our attention. He also said that since Coalinga was such a small town that anything like this would go through the oil industry there like fire, even though it is just gossip. Mr. Herman has not discussed this with anyone and, of course, will not mention it to anyone but felt that we should know about it. Mr. Furtney was 56 years old when he died and had not done`any blending since about October 1939 or about three years prior to his death. Previous to October 1939 Mr. Furtney had done some Ethyl blending for the Associated Oil Co. at Avenal (the Los Nietos Refining and Producing Co. refinery). Yours very truly, W. H.
