Emphasis has been given to this stability on 1242 since this is the last remaining property in which the Krummrlch and Anniston plants differ. Material produced at Krummrich has thermalchemical stabilities as low as Anniston's, but Krummrich 1242 has a wider range in stabilities. The thermal-chemical stabilities have ranged from 0.28 ppm to .75 ppm during 1965* Foreign competition also produces material with thermal-chemical stabilities close to .2 ppm. A plant test was run this month by the Process Research Group and Technical Services Department to determine if crude aroclor with small quantities of low-boilers produced more stable aroclor than crude aroclor with high quantities of low-boilers. Material from Nos. 2 and 3 chlorinators which had small quantities of low-boilers did not produce more stable aroclor than material from the other chlorinators which had large quantities of low-boilers. This means a measure of the low-boilers is not a measure of stability at the present levels, and Nos. 2 and 3 chlorinators do not produce more stable material as was stated in last month's report. Further plant tests will be run to determine chlorinator conditions which will produce more stable aroclor. DSW 296448 STLCOPCB4066392 2 Dept. 246 Operations i Hie $C1 off-gas line was cleaned on June 24. The cleaning reduced the back pressure, but on June 25 an operating error of feeding chlorine to an almost empty chlorinator created high temperatures and plugged the off-gas line at the department. This has caused about 10$ of the HC1 gas to be sewered. The line will be cleaned during July when stocks are high enough to allow downtime for the clean-out. Hie experimental horizontal pump on No. 2 still was started up. It has operated satisfactorily so far. It Is still necessary to boil down the still with the submerged pump because the horizontal pump loses prime before the end of the boil down leaving three to four times the usual residue in the still. If the horizontal pump continues to operate satis factorily further piping modifications will be made so that it can be used for boil downs. There was no progress this month to demonstrate the nuclear density gauge on No. 4 chlorinator. The evaluation of this.unit by TSD will be completec by IO/I/65. The difficulties appear to be in the temperature correcting system. There is no correlation with the density gauge readings and specific gravity readings.
