Wright SUBJECT: Proposed Environmental Protection Agency Standards for use of Asbestos Gentlemen: Last February, each of you received a copy of the statement Bruce Williams gave at the February 15, 1972, EPA hearings in Los Angeles and were alerted to the proposed banning by the federal government of the spraying of all asbestos containing materials. We have just recently been made aware that the EPA plans to promulgate such standards very shortly - thus prohibiting the continued use of MK-3. The exact timing is not known, but may be as early as mid-July and possibly sooner. The language of the proposed standard is not clear as to when the actual ban becomes effective. Our efforts to maintain MK-3 will continue, and as additional infor mation is learned, you will be so informed. In the interim, we will be working with each of you to enable a shift of your Mono-Kote production to the MK-A formulation. 7^ Thomas P. A new definition to be added to Section 61.21 as follows "Wet Spraying" means a process of spray applying any product which contains asbestos on any portion of a building or structure in slurry form wherein the asbestos is blended with liquid binder prior to the introduction of the slurry into the spraying mechanism and the ratio of asbestos to binder solids in the slurry is less than 25 % by weight. 2. Section 61.22(e)(1) should be revised to read as follows The spraying of any product which contains asbestos other than by wet spraying on any portion of a building or structure is prohibited.
