I aa -very much obliged to you for your thoughtful lettfer of June 30th and quite in agreement with what you say. c I am. going up to Saranac on July 8th and will spend a couple of days there during which I will hare the opportunity of discussing this subject with Dr. Packard and Dr. Torwald who has taken over as Dr. Gardner* s successor. I then hope your suggestion that Dr. Gardner's manuscript be published can be accomplished within the next few months. There is a situation here which has given me and others who are interested in the successful continuance of the Saranac Laboratory, considerable concern. It is almost ten years since various industries began making annual appropriations to the Saranac Laboatory for research in the effects of asbestos upon human beings who inhaled it. In that time, those of us who have been follow ing what was done at Saranac and who have bad the opportunity of first-hand clinical information, have learned quite a bit, bat there has been no authoritative pro nouncement embodying the results of tbs .Saranac research. This state of affairs is nobody's fault, but it is quite unfortunate. During the war period, as you c know. Dr. Gardner lost, through death, three of hi3 chief assistants and could find no replacements for them. His efforts to carry on with all the added responsibilities due to these deaths, I think, were largely responsible for bis own death. In the meantime, there has been quite a stirring up of activity on the part of State Industrial Commissions and bodies in the United States and Canada, with the result that there has been threatened legislative actions or procedures based upon assumptions as to *the effects of asbestos which may or may not be correct. ATI concerned are looking to Saranac for a reply to their questions and it would be an immense help to both industry and constituted authorities if they could believe that some of the fruits of Dr. Gardner's activities will soon be available.
