Shortly after our foraal organisation, an office vas taken In the Graybar Building, 420 Lex ington ATenue, convenient of access to centers hav ing headquarters in uptown and downtown New fork, and to centers visiting from out-of-town. One of the first things we did was to visit Vashington for the purpose of acquainting the De partment of Justice and Federal Trade Commission with full details of our organisation and the ex tent of our proposed activities, Te are furnish ing these and other government departments Inter ested, with copies of all statistical data distri buted to our nemters, Ve have endeavored to guard the lead indus tries from unfair competition. In this connection we have filed a protest with the Federal Trade Comclesion relative to the use of the term "Leadite* for a product containing no lead end competing with caulking lead. Our statistical program vas begun with the collection of weekly domestic pig lead sales statis tics. These are gathered and distributed on Uonday of each week and now cover lOOf of the doneetle pig lead sold in the United States, As cur centers know, the fora of reporting domestic pig lead sales has teen expanded to include information regarding the type of bueinese done and the grades of lead sold, Wembers ars now supplied with a comprehensive weekly picture of the lead me^ket. The association has begun a eurrey of the Flushing and building code situation in the large cities of the United States with a view to en couraging or maintaining the epeciflcation of lead rather than inferior rua table metals for various uses. In cooperation with the Bureau of Standards and the American Gas Association, we ere arranging for a competitive test of baked red lead as a priming coat for protective pipe coverings. If this test proves successful the outlet for red lead should b* greatly increased, Tt are continuously accumulating a large amount of useful data regarding lead and 1*ad products to be made the basis for later educational and publicity efforts, . Sc:./ of the lead industries have been receiving much und sir..bis and unwarranted publicity regarding lead poisoning, To are investigating this serious problem with a view to counteracting this type of publicity. Early in the year, when Congress announc'd its intention of writing a new tariff bill our association sounded the opinion of each member with respect to having the Association take part in tariff matter*. Our membership unanimously agreed that it was unde-' sirable to re quoAt an* change up Or down in the rates on lead ores, concent.**'-!?, metal, or finished pro ducts, Ecwever, some of our manufacturing members re quested the association to make a strong attempt to have the drawback law liberalized eo that they could compete more readily in export markets. At the request of the Executive Committee your Secretary represented the association in this tariff matter at various con ferences in Tashington, Eo far vs have been successful in presenting our vises and feel confident no action will be taken in revising the lead tariff, either up or down. ..
