c <b QF6 ^ DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES BOX 7921 Madison, Wisconsin 53707 nbi hi MADISON, WI----- A three-month study of PCB contamination in the Sheboygan River watershed concluded, today, that a warning against eating fish caught on a 24-mile stretch of the river will continue indefinitely. A June 21st fish consumption advisory will continue on the Sheboygan River from the Sheboygan Falls dam to the Coast Guard Station at Lake Michigan, the Onion River from Gibbsville to its junction with the Sheboygan, and Weeden's and Greendale Creeks. The report also recommends expanding PCB monitoring of salmon and other fish migrating into the Sheboygan River. The PCB Committee recommended additional river bottom sampling from Sheboygan Falls to Sheboygan Harbor, and expanded PCB monitoring elsewhere in the state, especially on industrially-used streams. A special legislative appropriation will provide $34,100 to support PCB studies in Lake Michigan tributaries through July, 1979. The report recommends an additional $160,000 for toxic monitoring on other state waters through July, 1982. Monitoring will continue thereafter concentrating in problem areas as they arise. The PCB Committee further recommended that DNR work with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to develop a regional PCB landfill site for long-term disposal of Wisconsin's PCB wastes. Currently, two sites in Alabama and Idaho are authorized to accept PCS-contaminated materials. Tecumseh Products Company and the City of Sheboygan Falls, currently under DNR order to collect and contain PCB wastes discovered on their property, will store the materials until an approved site is available. There are presently more than 250 drums stored on the property. * The 51-page report issued today details the PCB investigation--sampling sites, techniques, analyses, and recontnendations as well as correspondences among DNR, Tecumseh Products Company and the public.
