Subject: Geon 8857 White 126 Recipe Change/Potable Water Use
At your request I have reviewed the recipe changes made for Geon 8857 White 126 in light of the use of this product for a drain fill tube for an ice maker.
My preliminary review of the recipe changes indicate that the changes of particular concern is the barium/zinc stabilizer, Mark 4716, which does not have any FDA clearance. This stabilizer contains a water soluble fraction which could migrate from the compound.
Although some of the other ingredients also do not have any FDA clearance, they appear to be of lesser concern. The barium/cadmium stabilizer apparently does not have a soluble component indicating a low potential for migration into water. While the red pigment (710148; in 85435 red 702MB) which is present at 20 ppm was banned by FDA, this chemical also is completely insoluble in water. Finally, the preliminary information that I have on Drapex 409 indicates that it does not baw any PDA clearances but that some of the chemistry is similar to polyester resins which have clearance. The additional information that I have asked the supplier to provide should help clarify this further.
At this point the focus appears to be on the barium/zinc stabilizer. However, more information is needed to enable me to assess the potential risk posed by the use of this compound in the above application. The best way to approach this would be to conduct extraction studies of the actual part under simulated use conditions. We should be able to develop a fairly simple protocol using atomic absorption to look for barium, zinc, and perhaps cadmium species. The alternative would be to use worst case assumptions and calculations. To do this I will need detailed dimensions and use conditions as well as information on anything that GE might add.
