Pre-employment physicals to help fit potential employees to the job and screen out potential problems. Designate restrictions when appropriate in evaluating the handicapped applicants. Pre-employment physical requirements: 1. Review of personal health and occupational history 2. Review of lab results, EKG and x-ray findings 3. Review of audiograms 4. Review and interpretation of spirometry test 5. Hands-on physical exam B. Diagnosis and treatment of occupational injuries and illnesses. 1. Be available to render treatment and definitive care of same; in office, hospital emergency room, and plant (in case of a disaster). 2. Refer employees to appropriate specialist, when necessary, to ensure best available treatment for occupational injuries and illnesses. 3. Conduct special exams as may be necessary to help resolve problems of medical limitations placed on employee by other (personal) physicians. Evaluation of alleged job-related injuries and/or illnesses, total or permanent disabilities and certain returnto-work releases. C. Periodic clinical and multiphasic health exams to evaluate the health status of employees. This includes: 1. Review of computer printout from questionnaire completed by the employee. 2. Review of lab findings 3. Review of EKG and chest x-ray, ifdone 4. Review of audiogram and spirometry test 5. Review of visual acuity 6. Hands-on physical exam 7. Medical surveillance exams as may be required by OSHA or corporate policy, e.g.: 1. Heavy equipment and forklift operators 2. Medical clearance for wearing respiratory equipment 3. Tankerman's license exam (Physician must be designated as U. S. Public Health Physician). (Nos. 1 and 2 usually involve only signing the certificate after the nurse has screened the information. For No 2, only those employees with abnormal spirometry or history of chronic pulmonary disease need be personally examined.) E. Miscellaneous Duties 1. Become familiar with materials and operations of the plant so the physician can review exposure of personnel to significant chemical and/or physical stress. 2. Visit the plant at regular intervals and be available for phone consultation and for other advice as needed by the occupational nurse. 3. Help formulate written standing orders to be used by the nurse in occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses. 4. Be responsible to arrange continuing services with another physician when unavailable. Notify plant health services of backup physician arrangements. 5. Assist in health maintenance and awareness programs which may be initiated from time to time. 6. Provide advice for employee assistance program.
