gaged in being a part of safety, by thinking and acting safely, otherwise, the supervisor's five-minute safety talk may just turn out to be another rest period. Encourage the suggestor to be specific, eliminating the blanket coverage proposal. Use a % inch square sketch area on the back of the sug gestion blank and, for clarity and speed of reply, encourage all safety investigators (o use a Polaroid type camera and to submit a suggestion for analysis with accompanying photographs. Keep in mind to always photo graph only the safety problem, thus replac ing the poor descriptions, improper words, and ambiguous statements and misunder standings with a picture worth 1,000 words.
The Maintenance System so often falls into the category of the "If" --if we only had "PM" (preventive maintenance) then all our troubles would be over -- nonsense! We all believe that PM has its place. At this time we are concerned with the power vehicle operator and his machine. We sug gest that his attitude should ran in the same vein as Chevrolet's "Good Driving" recom mendations. We will call them ""Rules for Good Trucking" which, whpn followed, re duce maintenance:
1. I will treat my truck as though I had paid for it
2. I will drive for the other fellow's safety.
3. I will learn and practice the proper method of operation.
4. I will conscientiously operate within the capabilities of my truck.
5. I will adhere to the maintenance sched ule for my truck.
The Statistical System.
Items that cause statistics: "BoyI I wish they'd fix that floor I" "Pretty good, huh-- Sealy?" "Who moved that van?" "All this for just one cigarette?" "Push back to back, not with forks!" "I just gotta keep m'forks upl" "Yippie! They fixed the brakes I" "Hang on, Joe!" "Not again!" The attitude of the driver has an important bearing on safety. Sure, the safety program has to be a balanced onel You are all familiar with the saying, "Partners in crime" --one, the killer; the other, the killed. We say to you, Partners in Safety!" One, the saver; the other, the saved 1

The Quality System implies safety with dependability, with knowledge with proper training both practical and theoretical. We believe in driver training for the highway. Why not a universal, mandatory vehicle op eration training program, coordinated by the National Safety Council?
All too often, an inexperienced, untrained employe has a trucker's badge pinned to his shirt and is told to go to work. His only qualification is that he can drive a car. "Oh, but wait!" says the foreman, "I spent a whole afternoon with him I" This is good advice, Wt good training. A good training
program\is one similar to that outlined in the Intediationa! Material Management So ciety publication, A Training Program For Operators^of Industrial Power Trucks, by ElmerfCiancey..
Dr. John V. Grimaldi, director of the Center for Safety, New York University, states that the time-proven approach to solv ing safety problems is simply "Evaluate the hazards, then eliminate them." In short, reducing hazards , on the job. is a much more attainable goal than trying to change peo ple's behavior pattern.
On the other hand, we of Harrison Radi ator suggest you consider the environment influence in which these safety problems arise. For example, I am sure you will agree that a clean plant is the best way to start a safety program! A dirty plant encourages sloppiness, and a sloppy attitude breeds accidents.
We also feel that participation is a dirccy way to improve safety and reduce acqidcm frequency. Be a part of safety--not the ac cident 1 Sometimes the salaried employe is the forgotten man, especially management personnel. Here lies the greatest potential a company has. I am glad I work for a com pany that recognizes the efforts of all of its employees, even to-the extent of publicly acclaiming their efforts. The latest of these programs revolves around the participation pf an individual in his or her local com munity activities. Does it not follow that all of us in charge of administering safety pro
grams should initiate a similar award systern? It is time that all people who donate their efforts and talents in the behalf of their fellowmen be publicly recognized, not just given a pat on the back.
