Also, as we discussed, there is very little potential for exposure to significant amounts of Vinyl Chloride during thermal processing of our PVC compound. Product residual levels are below 1.0 ppm. Personal exposure measurements taken on people working in our plant where compound is processed indicate exposures below 0.5 ppm and in many cases below normal detectable limits. Dr. Drurawright and I have reviewed the information sent to you from FMC concerning their study of workers exposed to aryl phosphates. Dr. Drumwright*s response is attached. Although all of the details of the study are not known, such as the particular staining technique used, the study results do not appear to be significant in terms of indicating any potential health effect. Nor would they indicate any changes in workplace handling procedures. This is basically what FMC has stated in their letter. The reporting obligation FMC mentions in the letter is from TSCA 8(d) which requires reporting the results of any study conducted on over 200 chemicals listed in the regulation. Drumwright, 1 July 12, 1984 TRIARYL PHOSPHATES JUL16 '84 Route: Copy: Fils: X-F: As per your request, I have reviewed the data recently provided to the Aberdeen Chemical Plant by FMC Corporation regarding triaryl phosphates* FMC has apparently decided that the recommendations outlined on their MSDS relative to the appropriate handling of triaryl phosphates are adequate. Our investigation included a review of the current literature for triaryl phosphates and, from a medical and toxicological standpoint, our conclusions are essentially the same as those at FMC - i.e., no adverse health effects have been recorded where the phenomenon of non-staining of monocytes has been observed. The safety and handling precautions recommended as "standard industrial hygiene practices" by FMC for handling triaryl phosphate products appear appropriate.
