Cabot of Boston. It la claimed to be an extremely uniform product of exoeilent whiteness, and Is manufactured In two speolfio grades designated PI and P4. The p4 grade ta the finer of the two, and will be dlacuased In relation to Flat Wall Paints. This grade la claimed to have excellent flatting power, low binder demend, good holdout end color uniformity, uniform angular ahean and resistance to polishing when washed. In order to take advantage of what we can assume to be just claims, we decided to undertake development work using this pigment. This decision was influenced by the foot that ooat of Wollastonlte per gallon was very favorable. Development Work Pigmentation Prime It was decided to have a biding of approximately 410 units throughout the work and that tbrsa types of titanium would be used. These were: a) Pure Buttle Titanium b) 3C Titanium Calolum o) A combination of the above two It was realised that the use of titanium calcium might adversely affect the waahablllty of the flats. Inert In addition to the use of Wollastontte aa the sole Inert, combinations of It and thraa calcium carbonates and magnesium alllcate were used. Those used werei Calwhlte Snowflake Atomlte Nytal 300 and LorIte Vehicles Alkyd Our regular odorleaa aoya alkyd (37 0 5&) wae baa to to our work, although later, one of our Kem 01o alkyde (39 0 62) was also tried to a limited extent. Pormulstlon Wollaatonlte p4 Titanium Series When used In combination with rutile pure titanium at 65 and 70% B'.V.C., results were unsatlafactory due to "ghosting", "smokiness" end etreekineee all over the paint outs. Combinations of pure and reduced titanium with P4 although showing somewhat better results, still were not passable. Our next step was the use of WoHaetonite P4 with reduced 3056 titanium. This Involved a P.V. C. ladder from 60 to 72# in 2# Increments. This aeries, while better, still showed some smokiness end streaklnesa. It was noted that in all these experimental batches, and Including factory pilot batches, tbe use of P4 as the inert produced good flow, levelling and excellent brusblng properties. Wollaatonlte Pt/Celwblte or/ Reduced /Snoflek* or/ 30# Titanium /Atomtte / It waa thought that tbe use of calcium carbonate replacing part of the ?4 might be of advantage. We used a retto of P4 to Carbonate of 1:4 end P.V.C.'a running from 60 to 70% as followst P4/Celwblte/ 65 - 63% P.V.C. P4/Atomlte 63% " P4/Snoflake/ 70% P4/Calwbite/PureTitanium 6O-65#P.V.C. P4/Cslwhlte/Pure and30% Titanium 65# " All of these batobes (including factory pilot batches) were unsatisfactory due to "emoklnees", "ghosting" end streaklnesa. Results showed however alight preference for Calwblte over Snoflske and Atomlte. In a few experiments Nytal 300 was used with Cslwhlte and P4 along with 30% Titanium. NO advantage resulted. At this point the beat results were obtained with the use of Wollaatonlte P4 Cslwhlte 3051 Titanium at a P.V.C. of 69!*. 1 lb. ) 4 lbs.) This formulation was slightly changed to Include Cellte 6030. This was used on a beats of 10# of the total pigment volume, subtracting from both ?4 and Calwblte. LorIts was substituted for Callta on a volume basis of to and 15* of total pigment. Lortta at 10% showed an Improvement over Callte and over the pA/calwhtte 69* combination. The 15* Lortte combination wn* however, unsatisfactory. Tbla latter experiment was now repeated using (39062) In place of (37056) on a aollda baala. Slight Improvement showed In lab batches but no Improvement In fsotory pilot batob. We found this oolor points out the defects more readily then white. Brushouts were made In all oaaee, over wall primer and sealer on A x 4 ft. Baavecboerd using a 3 inch wall brush. Ten minute lap test and a one foot recoat for color uniformity was also done. Conclusions Unfortunately none of the many experimental batches were considered peesable and equal to plattone. The best were borderline due to "smokiness" end/or ghosting. Several of tbe best were tried by painting several rooms In bouses. While some of the pelnters considered them satisfactory. In our opinion they were not up to standard In every respect. V.C. we eougbt for eoet purposes, Improved flow and levelling over other Inerts. The uae of reduced titanium over pure, gave better appearance although the washing Is poorer and polishing greater.
