Hi Julia,
My editor got back to me and just wanted to double-check to see if it would be ok if we attribute (the attributable material) to you, as an agency spokesperson? Thanks!

Off the record: Three different offices work on vapor intrusion sites: the Brownfield office, the Superfund office, and The Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery (ORCR). Each has a very different approach, as you'll see below from each office's individual response.
For attribution to an agency spokesperson:
Based upon readily available data sources, EPA has identified 91 existing Superfund National Priorities List (NPL) and Superfund Alternative Approach sites where a response action was taken to mitigate unacceptable human health risks associated with vapor intrusion. As a result of revisions to EPA's Hazard Ranking System (EPA's system for evaluating sites for possible inclusion on the NPL) in 2017, EPA expects to evaluate potential new sites for placement on the NPL based on vapor intrusion.

Other contaminated sites are regulated under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). This universe of sites includes many cleanups that are overseen by States. EPA does not have a current estimate of how many of the 3,778 RCRA sites have vapor intrusion concerns. EPA estimates from 2000 and 2002 found that about % of RCRA sites were likely to have some possible vapor intrusion.
Brownfields make up a third category of sites with potential vapor intrusion concerns. The US EPA does not track the occurrence of vapor intrusion, or any other specific contaminant pathways, at brownfield sites. The US EPA encourages recipients of brownfield grant funding for assessment, area-wide planning and cleanup grants to consider vapor intrusion and vapor encroachment as part of property assessments and pre-acquisition due diligence, as well as within cleanup activities at brownfields sites.

Good morning,
I've hit my deadline. I'm hoping you might still be able to share any estimates today? I really appreciate it.

Good afternoon,
I'm reporting on vapor intrusion for Ensia Magazine and looking for an estimate of the number of sites in the U.S. impacted by vapor intrusion. Please let me know if one of you might be able to point me to any relevant figures --by Thursday. Thanks so much for your time and help.
