E* Mittnacht, Dear Mr, Mittnacht: In the matter of gas masks and the question asked by Mr, Davis of the Davis Emergency Equipment Company, I am sure you understand that we hgve had no wish to give anybody a monopoly on the production of these masks, We have simply recommended the Burrell mask because we have known it to be satisfactory and v?e have not known-of any others that were. If the Davis Company can make masks which are entirely satisfactry 1 have not the slightest objection to their use. The following things are necessary in the production of a good mask - The materials must be durable ; the face piece must be comfortable and tight, for even a slight leak defeats its entire purpose; the cannister must contain a fairly large quantity of the best quality activated nut charcoal tested so as to be certain of its efficacy. For the purpose we have in mind it is unnecessary to have materials other than the charcoal and, in fact, it is a disadvantage to have them in the cannister for the reason that they take up space and thereby shorten the life of the cannister, I would suggest that if the Davis people wish to have their masks recommended that they furnish us a sample of their product which can be examined and tested so as to determine its effectiveness.
