Levels of organo chlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls in margarine, vegetable oils, and some foods of animal origin on the Swedish market in 1967--1969

In 1967--1969 the levels of otganochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) were determined in about 1 900 samples of margarine, vegetable oils, and foods of animal origin. In relation to the acceptable daily intakes of the chlorinated pesticides and the magnitude of con sumption, high levels of organochlorine pesticides were found in one sample of egg yolk, some samples of baby food prepared from poultry, several samples of fish and all the samplej of human milk. The rest of the samples had low or moderate levels. About 90 per cent of the food samples investigated contained at most 0.1 mg/kg of the DDT-group (DDT + DDE + DDD), lindane, o-BHC, and PCB, and at most 0.01 mg/kg of dieldrin. The pesticide levels found are related, besides to acceptable daily intakes, also to temporary tolerances and temporary practical residue limits. The practice of expressing tolerances and practical residue limits for chlorinated pesticides in meat and fish as mg/kg fat is criticized.
