Ur. Lenington will also keep in close contact with those involved. The reason for this exposure 13 interesting. Dor one thing, it points out the fact that plug lubricated valves should not bo used for hand ling gasoline containing concentrated ''Ethyl" antiknock compound. It appears that this is important enough to have it setup in our specifi cations that this type valve should not be used in the eductor or cir culating system. It is believed that we can find a suitable type valve to be recommended for these lines. Meanwhile, we undoubtedly should check at all plants where such valves are in use to be certain that there is no leakage. If a plug valve is lubricated properly, there should be no trouble. However, even at the larger plants there is a leakage around the screw that forces lubricant into the valves. Cliff Lenington reports that.at Phillips Petroleum Company* s Rica Plant there is a deposit of ice at tines formed around plug valves used in the 100 octane gasoline lines, which could be that a deposit is building up at these points. Leningtcn advised that a Hr. subject company, had Just called him stating he t h o u g n ^ u ^ i a d been exposed to a form of "Ethyl11 fluid. Hr. been working around a plug valve which tied into a b l e n S ^ M ^ a n k . Ihis valve had not boon lubricated for quite soma tine, and there was a leakage at the point where the plug lubricant was intoduesd. Apparently this gentleman got some of the accum ulated deposit on his hands, then rubbed his hands on his face. It caused severe local irritation for a Bhort time. After work he undoubtedly became quite scared and called on Ur. Lenington to ex plain what happened. A t the time Hr. iiuckaby called, he claimed he felt good, and that he had washed his hands and face very thoroughly. Following your advice, Hr. Lenington will call Mr. Fred Gill Assistant Plant Manager, asking him to tactfully observe Hr. in order to make certain that he is Q.K. Mr. Lonington will the area to replace the leaking plug valve shortly. Meanwhile, the area has been roped off whore the leakage took place so that there will be no possible exposure to other persons.
