Clennon of H arry Holland 6 Son, Inc. has requested that we . pay particular attention to the terting for asbestos in Nos. 1615, 4fiU-and 4660 POLYTALS*. We v/ish to confirm that we have check ' ed these products repeatedly for possible asbestos fiber contamination. . Our cofbpany has set up n perloc'ic test for these talcs by nenns of . X-ray Diffraction, Continuous Scanning Method and reports on these materials continually state "no presence of asbestos formminerals". These tests are run on material coming from thfe mine location and do not represent individual shipr. ents or lots. In view of the above, we are pleased to report that these products meet the requirements of OSHA Asbestos Standard Bulletin 1910.93a, No. 20, therefore, are certified to be "asbestos free". . ILLINOIS 60635 DETROIT RHONE (313) 961-6760 CHICAGO RHONE (312) 689-6161 June 23, 1975 Mr. Joe Videki Ford Motor Company Plastics Division 7700 East Michigan Ave. Saline, Michigan 48176 Dear Joe: As you requested, 1 have checked on certifications on asbestos in talc and have found that OSHA does not certify raw materials and wi .1 not certify a tdlc deposit as being asbestos free. OSHA sets up t ie re gulations and it is up to the raw material manufacturer to abi le by them. * In the Federal Register of June 7, 1972, the Department of Lai ir published its standard for exposure to asbestos dust under the Occupatic lal Safety and Health Act. This standard, effective July 7th of the same year, limits the eight hour time-weighted airborne concentrations of asbest >s fibers, to which employees are exposed, to 5 fibers per cubic centimet ;r of a i r . In addition, a ceilipg concentration of 10 fibers is not to b( exceeded. This regulation defines tremolite, actinolite and other acicul ir minerals commonly associated with some industrial talcs as asbestos. Pfizer is pleased to certify that all talc products produced our Barretts, Montana plant (Pfizer product code prefix MP) are in c o m p lia n c with OSHA regulation 1910.93a and OSHA Field Directive //74-92. This cei ification is made on the basis that these produ*"Tt>otain no asbestos or a bestiform materials within detectable limits when examined by X-ray diff action and electron microscopy. BX-127 and BX-128yMontana talcs are exce tionally low in tremolite and frge^ot'^asbestgs f^bdns, to the limit of meas rability by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. To investigate this further, the people in your Industrial Hyg ne Department might wish to visit with the two Pfizer research men, Harold S anley and Robert Norwood. These men have found that certain mixtures sh wn to be free of asbestos-like minerals by X-ray diffraction and the light m croscope nevertheless contained 5X or more of asbestos impurities when .iewed in a transmission electron microscope. I have included a copy of their paper "The Detection and Identification of Asbestos and Asbestiform Minerals in Talc." If a meeting with our people would be of advantage to you, we would be more than happy to try and arrange it. 200? 0699 ' PRODUCED BY FORD Mr. Joe Videki r Ford Motor Company - 2- June 2 1975 I believe the freight rates quoted to you on May 9, 1975 are s 11 in effect from Barretts, Montana to Saline, Michigan in bags or bulk: Shipped FOB ( per net ton: 2 BX-127 BX-128 The typical chemical and physical properties of these tales is s follov.s: Si02 MgO CaO Fe23 A1203 % % 61.4% 29.9% 0.6% 1.0% 2.2% .
