Nr. Leonard V. Weaver Product Development Manager Bird & Son Inc. East Walpole, Massachusetts 02032
Dear Mr. Weaver:
We understand from your letter of July 3 that you wish to submit, from your Charleston plant a revised version of your currently Listed Class A uniform thick ness shingle and a new thick butt type to determine its eligibility to bear the Class A label.
As mentioned to you during our July 2 telephone conversation, since you are revising the asbestos content In the current single, reducing It approximately 50 per cent, justification for continued listing will have to be shown by performance In Spread-of-Flame and Burning Brand tests. The thick butt shingle will require the full series of fire tests.
For your use In submitting these two shingles to us, we are enclosing an application form In duplicate. Please have the original signed by an authorized officer of your company and returned to us with the Indicated preliminary deposit. The carbon copy Is for your own file records.
Upon receipt of the executed application form, we shall ask our Charleston Inspector to contact your Plant Manager to arrange a mutually agreeable date on which he can witness production runs of these shingles and select samples for our tests.
Very truly yours
