BARBOUR POINT CCMFORT OPERATIONS I / ir' February 10, 1971 RE: MODIFIED 3K #8705 RESPIRATORS I spoke to Bob Barghini today about 3M's proposal to supply Point Comfort with enough modified #8705 respirators to run a two-week feasibility test. He explained that the prototypes that he would supply would merely be the regular #8705's with soae type of a waterproof rubber-like foam on the periphery. The primary purpose of this modification is to detein^ae if the foam can eliminate or, at least, minimize ti^ probln of sweat soaking the respirator and making it useless. The prototype is merely an intermediate step. If in the trial run it proves successful, Barghini will then move to a two-piece system consist ing of a "permanent" face piece to which the disposable filter material could be attached. When Errol Robinson visited me yesterday, he suggested that 3M first send a few of the modified #8705*s to Point Comfort. After you people looked them over, you would have a better idea of whether or not the proposed test should even get off the ground. Both Barghini and I thought this to be a good idea. As a result of Errol's suggestion. Bob will make up a few prototypes and send them to Errol. Comfort operation our $6705 shells minus the straps and aluminum nose clip. I enjoyed the meeting with yourself and Mr. Errol Robinson as it more clearly defined in my mind the precise problem with our product that exists at the Pt. Comfort Works. Since our meeting I have had the opportunity to sit down with our laboratory people, and they have accepted the challenge of the Idea that you have concerning a frame in which the present shell minus straps and nose clip could be fitted and replaced. It is their feeling that this can be done and work is already begun. Frankly, we feel that 4.WW say be in a little better position to move quickly since we do haws eooeellent laboratory facilities and have a great familiarity with the product construction and several other points that need to be considered, we would like to thank you, however, for bringing this thought or idea to our attention. Under separate cover I am sending to your attention the remainder of our filters that can be used on the #8700 Respirators that are in use at Pt. Comfort. As the frame idea develops we will certainly be getting back to you through Mr. Bonney in Pittsburgh concerning the possibility of con ducting further tests as to whet type of approach is the best. Ke would hopefully have one or two and possibly more ideas or proto types. In view of the increased interest of unions I and govemaent in occupational safety, hygiene and health, I think you can expect ore inquiries such as that of Mr. Clark. There is no way we can prevent employees fro* contacting outside people other than by laproving our own prograas and conditions to the point where they have confidence in us. Even if we were perfect, a few would still question our integrity. In ay opinion, you should be living within the threshold Unit value for asbestos. The only exception to that should be for special circuastances of operation where such would be iapossible or Impractical to accomplishf then a protective device would be in order. Mr. Clark is the brlckmason referred to in our correspondence of January, captioned "Potroom Crucible Repairs". Dr. Richards discussed vlth Mr. Clark the problems of working vlth asbestos and the protective meas ures to be taken but, apparently, he vented outside advice. All members of the brlckmason erev working with asbestos have been told that dust-type respirators are available to them and are advised to use them. Mr. Clark uses his respirator at all tines when there is an ex posure to asbestos, but the others generally do not. This disturbs Mr. Clark, and he thinks that an exhaust system should be Installed to ventilate the building and that same of the work should be done outdoors. Ve feel that these ideas cure not impractical and our engineering group will study the beet way of doing it. Ve would like to have your comments, particularly with regard to the possibility that some of the employees could request periodic examina tions, possibly by outside specialists. , H. A.
