os-b7 June 3, 1957 Mr, Allen D, Brandt Chief Ind. Hyg. Engineer Bethlehem Steel Ccespeny, Inc. Bethlehem, Pennsylvania Dear Alt P?SSllfAO yOUr 0f ^ ^ r**u,,4in* toociolty data on ^...-- '* f The range finding toxieity data indioates that rata survived dosages of 52*9 gram pap kilogram of body weight, Thia indieatea that the material ia "praotloally innocuous" when fed orally to thia apeoie. The Minimum Lethal Oral Dose for rabbits was 3,5 to 4,5 grama per kilogram and following akin absorption in rabbits the lethal dose was 4 to 5 grama per kilogram* Obviously, the rabbit Is a much more sensitive apeoie to thia fluid, i Skin and eye irritation studies with animals indioates that 24 hour oontaet resulted in less irritation than results when a 10 per oent 1 soap solution is tested similarly, . Rats survived 6 hours exposure to an atmosphere saturated with vapors ! of the fluid. Vapors were lntroduoed into a suitable animal ohamber tar bubbling oompressed air through an orifloe immersed in the liquid. The vapor-laden air stream was then passed through an implnger flask to capture droplets or aerosol and to allow only vapors to pass into the chamber. VThe animals were not seriously affeoted by the exposurej breathing remained regular although there was slight irritation of the respiratory traet as evidenced by salivation and slightly reddened muoosa. The exposure oaused only a slight degree of laorimatlon. j ` _ .. We interpret the above animal toxioity data as indicating that the j fluid possesses a very lew order of toxieity, Practical experience with Fydraul AO and ether ecnewhat elmllar fluid# haem shewn, however, I that accidental eontaot with the eyes of workmen oauses pain out of I proportion to the degree of irritation obtained in animals. This has ooourred where droplets of the fluid have been splashed in the eyes or where workmen might have the fluid on their hands end wipe \ their eyes. In no ease has there been any damage to eye tissues or \ impairment of vision. The second praotloal consideration refers to a suggestion that work men avoid needless prolonged skin oontaot principally because the fluid has an excellent solvent action whlon oan defat the skin and DSW 018681 STLCOPCB4005225 Mr. Alien D. Brandt--Page 2--June 3# 1957 lead to possible irritation* Although I an not at liberty to disclose the components or Pydraul AC, I can tell you that the vapor pressure is extremely low with boiling Joints at 760 m something over 350C* I think it highly improbable hat any significant concentrations of fluid would thus be picked up by the compressed air and reach workmen using air masks connected to the ocmpreesed air line. We would not hesitate to use the fluid in compressors within our company where air masks might be connected to the compressed air lines Intended primarily for other uses* We have indicated this thought in correspondence with other potential user* and presumably there are a number of applications throughout ths country where the fluid is now being used and as described in your letter. Enclosed is our Teohnloal Bulletin ODB-56-27 on Pydraul ACj X hope you will find it helpful* If X can be of any further help or add to the above information, please let me know* Sincerely yours.
