More PRACTICAL IDEAS.
Bushings Must Come
Every operator hat sweated {or hours over t stubborn bushing that wouldn't budge. Besides being in tight, o bushing
is often in t spot you coo'l get at, let alone swing a hammer. That's why I made the puller shown here.
Puller is rnnde of two rouoded wedges to fit inside the bushing. Rounded outside has sharp-edged grooves for dig ging into the bashing. By making wedges of tool steel and then hardening
and tempering edges, toot remains sharp and digs Into any bushing metaL
Left-hand wedge has large hole through center so it does not hind bolt
and can move sidawaya, away from
right-hand wedge.
To use, place puller inside bushing,
then tighten nut to expand wedges
against bushing's aides. Place yoke and
nut over bolt. If lightening nut on top
of yoke won't pull bushing out in one
piece, I don't know of anything that will
do tho job.
Another handy gadget for removing o
shaft from a gear is made of two nuts
and a stud, right-hand sketch. It's just
s ease of having a solid wall or some
thing to anchor the etod against

Now water from buildings eaieri celver and is pumped by auxiliary | pump to filter. There U enters section, and worka its way down t]^

Sump pump sends filtered water the fiber deoderlzed for ha final poH| lion. From there it Is fed to the boQer feed receiver for use in boilers.
We change charcoal twice s year cost of $1 per change. Net coil of fa. ttallstlon was $110.60. Cost ol replsda chemical twice a year would have br $460. Our present cost per year is 1576, or o saving ol $204.
Installation paid for itself lo one year -^we get no oil back in boilers.

Wire Wheel Cleans Taper Plug*
Old Boiler Makes Feedwater Filter
When our load doubled last year, we had to put an extra boiler into service. Then we used twice as much cylinder oil as before. Strain was too much for filter. We got oil back in the boilers.
At first It looked as though we'd have to change the filter chemical more often, but that was an expensive job (12 bags for CQch change el $20 a bag). We found a way to beat the rap.
We took one old condemned boiler and cut it through tho middle. Then wo welded in three bafBe plates, sketch.
In two sections formed by baffles, we put charcoal and covered it with screen. Screen fromes ore from old $&*ln. gal vanised pipe, screens are H*in. galva nised wire mesb. Next wo Installed a sump pump in third section to lift water to the fitter. Pump is submerged type.
Kerb's an easier and faster way for cleaning a tapered plug than shown la Operators' Notebook No. 69. We caP this the epin method. If you have bn0 'wheel-stand, it's easy to toko plot* to wheel. Fit band holer or spin-*dck In
side plug and use as shown. Put hollow plug on spin-stick. With
a pad in your bond, hold plug lightly against apia stick and apply against wire wheel. This causes plug to route on epin nick. Plugs cleao quickly and
thoroughly with no flat spots.
