COMPANY ASBESTOS REVIEW PROGRAM
RECEIVED JAN G 1382
Birford W, Culpepper, MJJ,
In our discussion on December 30th, we agreed that Kinston would send the x-rays and diagnoses of the 15 benign symptomatic cases to Corporate Medical if such a review would contribute to improved Company-wide uniformity of diagnosis of asbestos-related medical problems. You planned to bring the matter up for discussion in the meeting of the Asbestos Committee in Wilmington on January 8th. The following summary of key points about the Kinston program may be useful to you.
Key Points
The only x-rays readily available at Kinston are those made by Plant and used by the Radiologist as basis for decision on referral to the Pulmonary Specialist.
The local Pulmonary Specialist preferred to make his own x-rays. His diagnosis was based on his own x-rays and clinical tests (e.g., blood gases, pulmonary functions, etc).
The North Carolina Industrial Commission doctors also preferred their own x-rays and their own clinical tests.
The Industrial Commission diagnosis was based on their x-rays and clinical tests, performed by one of their Medical Advisory Board Pulmonary Specialists, corroborated by a second, and reviewed and approved by their Medical Supervisor.
The Kinston Plant Medical Supervisor, Dr. John Ward, reviewed all but the most obvious diagnoses from our local Pulmonary Specialist with Dr. Ligo of Corporate Medical.

Key Points (Contd.)
The Kinston results look reasonable, with no "rubber stamping" or outright "reversals" among the three levels of diagnoses.
