Disposition of Asbestos Arc Shields Part Number 73-125
1. Situation
The 80 plus arc shields in-house are asbestos.
There are open P375 duplex orders for a number of these parts.
There is an A-Lot of 40 non-asbestos arc shields due October 15.
There is a health and safety complaint by the operator who indicates that he feels that drilling and assembling these arc shields are a, hazard to his health.
.2 Discussion
The division is actually opposed to the use of materials such as asbestos and is attempting to replace any asbestos or hazardous materials with non-hazardous materials.
The parts in question had the drawing changed to non-asbestos or hazardous material in March, 1982. No parts have been ordered, since 1982; i.e., January, 1982 - 150 pieces; May, .1982 - 200 pieces. The A-Lot arc shields are, at this point, an unknown entity.
The operator feels asbestos is a hazard to his health.
The shields are such that white powder residue is left on hands after handling.
3. A1ternatives
a. Drill and assemble available asbestos parts. Operator to wear protective suit, gloves and mask. Drill to have multiple vacuums at drill point and wetted.
