MARTINO MEMBER OF INDUSTRIAL CONFERENCE BOARD Joseph A. Martino, president of National Lead Company, has been elected a member of the National Industrial Conference Board. CHICAGO BRANCH ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENTS Paul J. Pater has been placed in charge of the paint, pigment and oil department of the Chicago Branch. He succeeds John L. Reque, who has retired after thirty-seven years of service. Mr. Pater joined the Carter White Lead Company in 1916, became a member of the General Office auditing staff, then comptroller of the Chicago Branch in 1937. In 19U1| he was appointed assistant manager of the branch. C. Howard Ellis, who has been directing the Blue and White line sales, now has charge of all paint trade sales for the branch. Mr. Ellis joined the Company in 1919, starting as a white lead salesman in the Milwaukee office. He handled dry pigment sales at the Chicago Branch from 19h2 until 19^7. Arthur R. Millas has been appointed sales manager of the pigment, oil and chemical department. Mr. Millas entered the employ of National Lead in 1929 at the Carter plant and in 1935 was transferred to Detroit. He came to Chicago last year in the industrial sales department. M KNUST HONORED ON FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY William Knust, Company advertising manager, was honored recently by the Directors at a luncheon in observance of his fortieth year of service with National Lead. Another luncheon was given him by departmental associates. First employed as a stenographer and bookkeeper in 1909, Mr. Knust -worked his way through every division of the advertising department. At one time or another he handled the company's direct-mail literature, dealer helps and painter helps, as well as general and trade pp er advertising. Mr. Knust was appointed advertising manager of the Company in 1927. He was the second president of Controlled Circulation Audit, Inc., serving from 1932 to 193U, being very active in its organization. In 19U8 he was appointed a member of the Industry Advertising Committee of the National Paint, Varnish and Lacquer Association. GARDINER, WILSON OFFICERS OF PHILADELPHIA ASSOCIATION J. W. Gardiner, Jr., president of John T. Lewis & Bros. Co., has been re-elected chairman of the executive committee of the Philadelphia Paint, Varnish and Lacquer Association. A. M. Wilson, Jr., vice-president of the Philadelphia subsidiary, was elected second vicepresident of the organization. B. H. WURTMANN, VETERAN EMPLOYEE, DIES B. H. Wurtmann, who retired on October 15 as credit manager of the Atlantic Branch metal division, died on November 13 after a long illness. He is survived by his wife and son. Mr, Wurtmann began his Company service in November of 1903 in the credit department of United Lead Company. In 1907 he was appointed credit manager. When United Lead became ^Birt of National Lead in 1928, Mr. Wurtmann was appointed credit manager of the Atlantic Wtfich metal division.
