B. Sstzler, refinery superintendent at that point, and requested that he furnish us with more detailed information. His report has now been received, copy of which is attached. Gillam, Assistant Superintendent, regarding the case, This memorandum I believe, is self-explanatory. "I talked this morning with Dr. C. H. Fortner in his office. The opening of this case with Doctors Fortner and Craig was a call from^JlB^to Dr. Fortner, who, being unable to attend, turned it over to Dr. Craig. reported hemmorage with vomiting and being in considerable pain. Dr. Craig did not call but prescribed over the phone with instructiohs for to call next day at his office. The tentative diagnosis indicated a disturbance in the stomach or alimentary tract - the hemmorage definitely not coming from the lungs and coupled with the vomiting, pain, etc. So an Xray was taken and it showed a definite dark spot on the stomach. An operation was thought the advisable and progressive thing to do. However, this course was not taken or permitted but still Soles required relief and natur^LIvdifferent possible courses were considered. liVhen ^H^informed Dr. Fortner that while his regular work did not bring him in contact with lead or lead fumes, yet at times, he did go over "there" or was shunted "over there" and that the fumes were "pretty strong". His treatment consisted of four shots of Sodium Theosulphate intravenously given and improvement followed, stated to Dr. Fortner that after each shot, he felt definitely improved - and (later) he wets released for work, commencing Monday August 2, 1957. Dr. Fortner said he did not diagnose this as lead poisoning but thought after 4)^g|^statement about the lead fumes, it was thought such a treatment might.give relief and, too - it would leave with the thought they were constructively trying to help rather than to force an unwanted operation and as relief and improvement followed, no other course was taken. The above treatment is not merely for lead - it is given for any form of metallic absorption. Dr. Fortner believes has an ulcerous condition - if not really tending to carcinoma, possibly even to malignancy. He thinks-an exploratory operation advisable and detailed to me somewhat the procedure that might be necessary. He believes Soles' condition is serious even if temporarily relieved."
