'iYhen we asked you if it would be all right to use your name in connection with the information you have given us, we did not have in mind advertising matter or exploita tion of any kind. You probably realize that our use of the material might be termed as such, but we do not believe that it should be. The only people to whom we would men tion such a matter are the members of research departments of several large companies who are primarily interested in a development of coatings such as ours, and who would like to know all they can about the toxic effect, if any exists. This material very seldom goes farther than these men who are, of course, responsible for the quality of the coatings used. . ' Dear Dr. Kehoe: I have been out of town for about ten days and have read with interest your letter of December 3rd. I Wa:s very glad to note that you feel we are safe in using a sma.11 percentage of lead oxide in our coating. As a double ' che ck on this matter, we are going to put away jars of acid and alkalin products lined with this material and have them te ted for any free lead content after a reasonable length of tim e. We will test the same materials stored in glass jars, as a control. With reference to your mention of ortho-eresyl-phosphate, we feel that you are quite justified in mentioning this. Al though we do use this material as a plasticizer in some coat ings for use on objects which do not come in contact with food, we use in our food lacquers either the di-butyl ether of ethylene glycol phthalate or other similar non-toxic pro ducts. We have been developing these materials in collaboration with the company manufacturing food container caps, and although I have mentioned to them that I have written you for your opinion along this line, I have not shown them your letteis or giv?n them the substance of them, feeling that you might pos sib y object. I am sure that they would like very much to know what your opinion is, and I would therefore like to show them your letter, if you have no objection.
