BUDGET - 1954 The secretary was asked to explain the reconaended budgets in accordance with the information mailed to members of the Board of November 24 and 25. It was then regularly moved, seconded and carried that the budgets for the various divisions be adopted,as recommended, as follows: . MEMBERSHIP - THE G. A* AVRIL COMPANY THE MURDOCK LEAD PRODUCTS CO. The election of The G. A. Avril Company, Lead Products Division, Langdon Farm Road and Seymour Avenue, Cincinnati 12, Ohio, and The Murdock Lead Products Co., P.O.Box 5298, Dallas 2, Texas, to membership in the Lead Industries Associ ation as of June 18, 1953 and May 1, 1953 respectively, by letter ballot of the Executive Cooanittee, was confirmed. , RESIGNATION CHIEF CONSOLIDATED MINING CO. The resignation of Chief Consolidated Mining Co. was accepted with regret and the secretary was asked to advise the Company that it would be welcome to rejoin the Association when business conditions warranted. METAL POWDER ASSOCIATION The Board formally approved the Executive Committee*s la Hot on the in crease in the Metal Powder Association*s payments to the Lead Industries Associ ation and the removal of the term "Acting" from the Acting Secretary-Treasurer*s title. The secretary was questioned as to whether he considered the payments of M.P.A. fair and sufficient to cover the actual cost to the L.I.A* He stated that he had calculated these payments during the year 1953 and considered them fair at that time. He pointed out, however, that as the M.P.A. grew, he felt that its payments should be reviewed from time to time and kept in line with the actual cost. - The Board instructed him to review the M.P.A. payments periodically in this light. 195A ANNUAL MEETING The secretary then reported that definite arrangements had been made with the Drake Hotel in Chicago for the annual meeting in 195A on April 22-23, which are the two days immediately following the American Zinc Institute meeting in St. Louis. LI 00513 Board of Directors Meeting Minutes -3 - November 30, 1953 1955 ANNUAL MEETING The secretary next called the Board1 s attention to the fact that at the last Board meeting he was instructed to make tentative arrangements for the 1955 annual meeting at various cities and resorts throughout the eastern part of the United States, which he had done. Arrangements for tentative reservations were made in Hew York, Atlantic City, Baltimore, Washington, Hot Springs, Va., and White Sulphur Springs, West Va. He then mentioned that informal discussions with some of the direc tors in the interim led him to explore the possibility of a joint annual meeting to be held with the American Zinc Institute in 1955- He reported that he had been able to make tentative arrangements with The Drake Hotel to handle such a joint meeting on April 28-30, 1955, the idea being that the first day could be devoted to the consumption of one of the metals, the second to the production of both metals, and the third to the consumption of the other metal. The Board generally felt that this would be a time and expense-saving device and it was regularly moved, seconded and carried that such a joint meeting be held, subject to similar approval of the American Zinc Institute. RESEARCH The chairman then informed the Board that the Board of Directors of his own Company had asked him to determine whether the Association is or should do research through some such-organization as Battelle Memorial Institute, to find and promote new uses for lead. It was revealed that the Association is not engaging in such activities and a number of the Board members present ex pressed the belief that this could best be done by individual member companies who are even now spending hundreds of thousands of dollars' a year in this direction. It was felt that some good might be derived from encouraging attendance of the top technical and research men of some of the member companies at the next annual meeting, or even before, to discuss this whole problem, to see in what directions, either industry-wide or individual company, research might be directed. It was also felt that the Association might explore the possibilities of answering in some way the large amount of publicity given to aluminum and other competitive cable sheath materials.
