Bo attempt has been Bade to cover routine activities, and research Is covered in a separate report of the research director. GENERAL 1. Information Bulletin. Two of these bulletins were sent to cra ters during the quarter. 2. Annual Heview Article. The Executive Vice President's annual review of the lead situation appeared in the February, 1964, issue of "Engineering and Mining Journal" and reprint* were sent to eeabera. 3. "The Position of lead In a Changing Technology." This was the title of a paper by L.I.A.'a Executive Vice President and Its Secretary before the annual meeting of the Metallurgical Society of A.I.M.E. In Bev Tork In February. Copies have been sent to members. 4. 1964 Annual Meeting. Preparations and the program for this year's annual meeting were completed and notices of meeting, programs and press releases were sent out. 5. Headquarters. With the removal of I.L.Z.R.O. to It* own quarters on the 19th floor of 392 Kadiaon Ave., L.I.A. and A.Z.I. completed plans for restoration of an enlarged conference room and other alterations on the l4tb floor, which Is now occupied completely by the two Associations. Work should be completed acme time In April. 6. Profile. L.I.A. is proud to have been selected as first among the metal associations to have been selected by "Engineering and Mining Journal Metal end Mineral Markets" for a "Profile," a series of which are planned by the publication. L.I.A.'* profile appeared In the February 24, 1964, issue and was based on Interviews with the Association's executives. 7. Meeting of Bon-Ferroua Metal Industry Representative*. The Executive Vice President attended a meeting of this group with represent atives of the U. S. Department of Commerce, State and Interior Departments, called by the Commerce Department, to discuss work of the O.B.C.D. RonFerrou* Committee. Rational Paint, Varnish and Lacquer Association Conference on labeling. The Health and Safety Director attended this conference and participated In a panel discussion on hazardous substance*. The coo* ference vas attended by representatives of government and Industry who are concerned with varnlng label* for paint, chemical*, and other product* covered by labeling legislation. 9. Stanford Research Institute--ILZRO Sampling Project. Advisory trips vere cade to Chicago, Cincinnati and Philadelphia a* part of this project to select sampling sites and confer with government air pollution agencies In each of the respective cities where the S.R.I. sampling crew collected air samples for lead analysis. 10. Meetings. The Health and Safety Director attended a meeting of the City of Philadelphia's Lead Poisoning Advisory Committee. Be also conducted a seminar on air pollution for graduate students in the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan, attended a luncheon on occasion of 50th Anniversary of Division of Occupational Health of the U. S. Public Health Service, the Rational Health Forum, and the organiza tion meeting of the National Association of Manufacturers' Committee on Employee Health and Safety. 11. California Institute of Technology end Report on Lead In the Ocean. Aa part of our Industry effort the Health and Safety Director visited Dr. Patterson of CalTech, author of a widely puollcized report on lead in the ocean, and Mr. George Getz, Science Writer for the Los Angeles Times. Dr. Patterson had recently completed a series of tests of ocean water from samples taken In the Atlantic and the Pacific waters, sad had found amounts of lead which appeared to him to require explanation. It was his explana tion that this lead could only have case from auto exhaust which occasioned the widespread publicity that his report received. INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT - GENERAL 12. Advertising. A one-page ad on a variety cf lead applications depending on different properties appeared In "Machine Design" and "Product Engineering." 13. "Lead." The flrat 1964 Issue of this magazine vas sent to the printers in March and should be ready for mailing In early April. INK*STRY DEVELOPMENT - NOISE AND VIBRATION it. Case History. The second Case History report on the experimental use of lead for sound proofing a room (in this case a polygraph room) vas circulated to members. An article describing several actual applications of lead for noise control that night be of interest to munlcipal engineers vas prepared for this magazine and accepted for publication, although the issue in which it will appear boa not been decided. A brief discussion of the theory of noise control and lead's use in it la Included. 16. Society of Automotive Engineers. A paper on leed for noise and vibration control, with practical examples of applications, vas prepared for presentation before the S.A.E. in Detroit an April 1, 19&. Preprint# vere obtained aid circulated to members and other Interested parties. 17. tead-llned Panels. Field teats vers cade at the nev Hotel America, Hartford, on bedroom vails some of vhlch are of normal hj-in. thick plastered gyplath and steel stud construction incorporating short section of If-in. thick gypsum board lined with 6-lb. sheet lead. These vails gave results equal to those vitheut the thin sections for all practical purposes so far as sound transolBstcn is concerned. A detailed case history report will soon be mailed to members. 18. Press WotBe. L.I.A. vas Invited to examine a noisy machinery installation at the Champlain Press in Roseland, H. J., and to recemend noise reduction methods. A cccblnatlon of a lead-lined enclosure and lead-loaded gock to reduce resonance is being applied. 19. ICllgor^ Poors. An Installation of these lead-lined removable partitions vas observed in a motel in Toronto and found to be giving highly satisfactory results for the price and for the purpose for vhich they are intended. 20. Oatevay Center, Chicago. t.I.A. has been making every effort to have lead anti-vibration pads Installed at this nev Tlshman project over the railroad tracks adjacent to Union Station in Chicago. The pads vere originally specified for the tower foundations, but James Ruderman of Nev Toxic, who has hod extensive experience with the pads in the Grand Central area, 1* consulting engineer for the project and has reccmaended them for the entire structure. Ve are making every effort to see that they remain in the final specifications, particularly since this vould be the first lead Job of its kind in the Chicago area. INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT-CERAMICS 21, Lov-Temperature Enamels. Board, for Joint publication and distribution of phase diagrams Involving lead that vould be larger and more useful to ceramists than any now available. It vos agreed that the large, comprehensive progrsn originally envisioned vcs premature because of lack of data, and a more modest program vos outlined. 23. Supplement. L.I.A. was represented at a meeting of the Alumimo Council of the Porcelain Enamel Institute, which woe called to explore Deans of Increasing the popularity of this material either through precatIon or research. Solder Coccittee met In Rev York on January 31 to review and rewrite the Soldering Chapter of the American Welding Society's "Welding Handbook." The Corelttee also cade suggestion* to the staff to be used in the new solder advertising being Initiated this year and In exhibiting solder at the Design Engineering Show la May. 27. Advertising. A page ad on lead wool calking of granite bridge piers appeared In "Engineering Revs-Record." 2fl. Anodes. An article from the January, I96U, Issue of "Material* Protection" by two men at the L'. S. Raval Applied Science Laboratory, Brooklyn, on "Lead Alloy Anodes for Cathodic Protection in Various Electrolytes" woo reprinted and will be distributed to members and others Interested. 29. Lead-lined Pools. Much time has continued to be spent on the use of lead linings for architectural fountains, planters and reflecting pools, with results evidenced by such linings in several pools at Con stitution Plaza, Inclining the much publicized Phoenix Life Insurance building, in Hartford, 35 tons of lesd pool and planter lining* at the nev Museum of Modern Art on East 53rd St., Hew York, and an even larger installation at the Hew York World's Fair Hall of Science. Prellsilnary data has also been supplied the office of Itoouro Yamasaki for a large pool at Harvard and a number of pools at the proposed World Trade Center in Rew York. Be also presented an outline of our program In this area for 1964 and was offered full support by the Industrial truck and battery manufacturers present. 32. Advertising.
