Pittsburgh Plate Glass NIMA 3g PRESENTATION Drs. deTreirlle Z* Gross of IHF talked about a study proposed to OCF pertaining to the biological activity of fibrous glass dust. The proposed investigation pertained to the inhalation (not injection) of fibrous glass dust, as follows: 1. Glass dust without binder 2. Glass dust with phenol-formaldehyde binder 3. Glass dust with chrome binder (Choce of binders to ne made) Animals (rats and hamsters) are to be exposed. I7.UJJ0 itlK 2 IHF was asked whether they would submit a proposal to NIMA based on the needs of the industry as it relates to the health hazard of fibrous glass. IHF indicated the would be willing to do so. Drs. de Treirlle & Gross then left the meeting. ********** INDEPENDENT COMPANY STUDY WITH IHF - PROGRESS REPORT It was reported that the following had signed the proposal relating to the intratracheal injection of mineral fibers into the lungs of animals for study: 1. United States Public Health Service 2. Pittsburgh Plate Glass it Pittsburgh Coming 3. Johns-Manville 4. Owens-Coming - approval will be given in August U. S. Rubber and CcrtainTecd have not as yet signed the proposal. PROPOSAL TO OCF FROM IHF Tao proposal dated June 6, 1966, from IHF to OCF was discussed. This study relates to the biological effects of the inhalation of fibrous glass. After extensive* discussion the Committee voted (3-1) that they should not consider an inhalation study at this time, but to wait and evaluate the initial results of the independent intratracheal injection study. CLINICAL STUDIES AVAILABLE TO NIMA All the companies present reported that no studies of any value were available with one exception. O-C had a study of 1400 employees, and would make available only certain data. Following discussion a motion was made, seconded and passed ThtA ra NIMA sponsored program be conducted by the Industrial Hygiene Foundation to evaluate the health hazards of fibrous glass on human beings. IHF is to be contacted to structure such a program (prospective and retrospective) and submit it to the Health 2s Safety Committee of FIMA for consideration. 42 012 0920 3 0-C indicated they would be willing to make available to IHF their medical history study for use with the program* After such a proposal is approved by the Committee it will be submitted to the Board of Directors for their consideration. IDCNA - HEALTH AND SAFETY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM The Committee felt such a program was valuable for IDCNA. However, the contents of the presentation was not clearly understood by all Com mittee members. The Chairman appointed H. Mcsler and C. Sheekler to outline a program for Committee consideration. OTHER BUSINESS (a) It had been reported by Pabco that a survey of asbestos workers had been set up at the University of California. \ The Committee advised that studies were also being con sidered in the New England Area and the Detroit Area on the same subject. The Committee is of the opinion that industry should cooperate with these investigators. (b) No data was available for reporting of the results of the air erosion tests of fibrous glass air ducts and duct liners. 'cj The next Committee Meeting will be scheduled when the proposal from IHF is received, or other urgent business arises. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
