Aubt Pairhall, MeXhann, and Hamilton, as well as by myself. Of this group I am the only one who is distinctly not qual ified to pass judgment on them. As I wrote you under date of March 25, we are ready.to publish the first four, inserting the analytical data you so kindly sent recently. Pairha11 showed me the letter he onej you vesterday, and it seems that if his suggestion meets with _ our approval, it would be better to hold off publishing the series of your papers until your analytical dispute with Fairhall is settled'to your satisfaction. We cannot make the Journal a battle-ground, and I think you will find other Journals take the same attitude. If, how ever, in view of my letter of March 27, you would prefer the publication of the first four papers, we will go ahead as a Greed upon. Prom the editorial standpoint, it will be very desirable if you can let us have your decision as so on as possible. As you. know, we now publish only six times a year, and delay now will mean delay in- publication which will be annoying to you and will interfere with our. schedule. Trying to view the analytical discrepan cies wholly dispassionately, I cannot see why a settlement of the differences could not be had in about a week, and I and all. of us hope you will be able to come here for as long as you think necessary. We talked all this over with Mr. Yant of the Bureau of Mines, and while he doesn't care to pass any judgment whatever on the relative merits of the analytical 5 procedure, he agreed with us that it would be fine if the dis pute could be settled once and for all.
