Charles,
It was good to talk with you this afternoon about potential areas of cooperation in the mining sector in Colombia. One concrete area of cooperation that we identified today is sharing best practices on cleaner technology to reduce mercury emissions, specifically the mercury capture system for artisanal and small scale gold mining (ASGM) that EPA developed with Argonne Labs (see link below).

Other areas of cooperation may be identified later through EPA's work under the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement, or the National Black of Chamber of Commerce's work with the Government of Colombia.
I have copied Cam and Marianne in this email and they may provide additional information. I have also copied Sarah Greenwalt in the Administrator's Office, who was referenced in the Administrator's letter that you just received.
We look forward to receiving more information about your work in Colombia, and exploring potential areas of cooperation with the NBCC.
Best regards,
Jane

Ok this is wonderful.
We are working with the Colombians to send a delegation to our regional meetings in Tampa April 12th- 14th. We will be taking a group to Cali Colombia in May (tentatively). I am wondering about a presentation or seminar on best practices and resources you may suggest. What is your approach to helping the independent miners and how is it best to go about interacting?

Dear Charles,
It was good to meet you and your colleagues on February 1 to discuss the National Black Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) activities in Colombia. As we discussed in the meeting, EPA has worked with Colombia on mining, environmental enforcement and public participation activities, but not on agricultural issues.

We would be happy to explore with you and NBCC possible areas of collaboration in the mining sector in Colombia, particularly as it relates to mercury pollution and clean technology. If you have any additional information on NBCC's activities or contacts in the mining sector in Colombia, this would be helpful. I am also copying Cam Hill Macon, who is the Senior Advisor in my office responsible for EPA's programs in Latin America, Middle East and Africa.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Jane
