Hughson defense state-of-art witness says hazards not known before 1977. C ijd f& J U u y ^ ' s i. ^ f- US Steel File Notes - US Steel's HA Schultz was at the 1/15/35 founding mtg. of IHF (Met Life Lanza memo lists attendees)(see p. 185-188 of 4th Ed.) I have hand notes that US Steel was present at National Safety Council mtgs since 1932 (see 4th Ed. pp. 734-736), member IHF from 1935/36 until 1977 (IHF index cards of membership), and member of American Petroleum Institute starting 1948 (that could be useful). USS's IH was Ken Morse, now dead, who started in 1952 or so and had a staff of 8 by mid1960s, reporting a to VP (O'Connor). Medical Director Merle Bundy attended a Saranac symposium "in 1954" - could be McIntyre symposium held in 1955, where published papers discussed asbestos (Bundy depo 9/23/96). Worked for USS starting 1958 after 4 yrs w/J&L Steel. Bundy said Selikoff ("Irv") was a "friend of mine." - says he met Selikoff in 1966 or 1967 (3/24/95 depo). I don't have copies of Bundy depos or cites for them A Ken Morse memo "Amocite" says asbestos has long been known to cause serious pulmonary disease (3/9/66). I don't know where I got this, (attached) USS subsidiary American Steel and Wire hygienist EO Kumler was at founding mtg of Amer Industr Hyg Assn in 1939 As to IHF - ask if USS ever contracted special/confidential industrial hygiene and/or medical surveys of industrial health hazards to employees (as IHF did for Asbestos Textile Institute, Hemeon rept. 1947 (see pp 726-728 in 4th Ed. of my book). This was a major activity of IHF. Get them to acknowledge that they received the Industrial Hygiene Digest since it started in 1936 or 1937 through to the 1970s, with abstracts of articles on asbestos hazards. Try to find out what library of old texts in industrial hygiene and medicine they have in corporate "library" of materials of IH Digests, etc. \. ?' ti FILE NAM E: US Steel (USS) DATE: 0000 DOC#: USS010 DOCUMENT DESCRBCIPTION: BC N otes on B undy D e p o sitio n % f /5 &7 ts f /y Xp~t,c'<^ C o '\ '-a.. ^>:.7 . /f ? -'J-c * ?
