Scott: Tampa Area Ranks Second in State Job Creation TAMPA, Fla. -- Today, Governor Rick Scott announced that the Tampa area added 27,000 new private-sector jobs in the last year, continuing to create the second-highest number of jobs among all Florida metro areas. Tampa's unemployment rate dropped to 3.3 percent, down 1.4 percentage points from one year ago. Statewide, Florida businesses created 127,400 new jobs in October and the unemployment rate dropped to 3.6 percent, the lowest rate since February 2007. Since December 2010, Florida businesses have created 1,448,300 new private-sector jobs. Governor Scott said, "It is great news that the Tampa Bay area continues to have strong economic growth, adding 27,000 new private-sector jobs this past year and ranking second in state job creation. As we continue to see job growth in Tampa and across the state, we are sending a message across the world that Florida remains a global jobs destination." The industries with the highest growth over the year in Tampa were professional and business services with 6,500 new jobs and construction with 5,400 new jobs. The Tampa area remained first among the state metro areas in job demand in October with 44,781 openings. The Tampa area also continues to rank first in the state in demand for high-skill, high-wage STEM occupations with 14,645 openings in October. In the last year, 216,000 people entered Florida's labor force, a growth of 2.2 percent. This rate is more than four times the national labor force growth rate of only 0.5 percent. In October, 23,082 Floridians were placed in jobs by CareerSource Tampa Bay and the state's other 23 local workforce boards.
