I. du Pont deNemours & Company, organic Chemicals D partment Petroleum Chemicals Division Wilmington 98, Delaware Inc,, Dear Jack: I'm afraid we shall have to disappoint you in the matter of the report on the California job as a whole, Mr. Cholak can gave you an interim report on the environmental part o.i the work, which, as you say, was completed in June. The sampling of the men and the analysis of the samples, however, will not be complete until sometime in September, presumably. Through what I believe to have been a misunderstanding, Dr. Curtis decided to do the last round of sampling, which includes the second set of samples of blood, m July and August (mostly August). This is an essential part ox the survey, for a very important reason which I shall disclose to you in more detail, later. (I did not include the results obtained on the first series oi blood samples, for the reason that they were not pertinent to the purposes of that report, being the initial, rather than the terminal, findings. They were, in themselves, exceedingly interesting, in that those obtained from the filling station group in Los Angeles were significantly higher (within the normal range) than those ox the group in San Franicsco. This must be verified before being reported, and therefore, I am not sorry at the delay occasioned by the arrangement made by Dr. Curtis for the final examinations. They wil; also have to be explained, if they are confirmed, for the first and easiest explanation of the fact (if it is a fact) is not necessarily the correct one.) We shall also have some delay in the preparation of the report, since the statistical analysis of the clinical data will take a bit of time. We can give you the essential information, however, before the final report has been prepared. I should not worry much about the different interpretation of the permissible concentration of mixed alkyls, at least so far as the views of the USPHS are concerned. This should be resolved, but I think it should be done between the two groups, and the Service informed - not necessarily "consulted."
