I have just returned from an out-of-town trip and wish to acknowledge your letter of August 22, i960 and respond to the questions you raise. In the United States, the discussions with public health authorities necessary to permit the intro duction of tetramethyl lead were conducted on an industry 'oasis by the manufacturers of TEL. In view of the suc cess of this method of procedure, a similar cooperative program was undertaken for overseas areas, involving initially a group of twelve European countries in which interest had been indicated by refiners. The contacts to this group of countries were made jointly by Dr. Kehoe, who had acted in this country for the two TEL suppliers, and representatives of The Associated Ethyl Company, the other international supplier known to be interested in TML. The degree of success of this first mission is indicated by the fact that in ten of the twelve countries initially dealt with the way has already been cleared for the use of TML in gasoline. In two countries*, namely 0 0 0 3 12 2 2 France and Switzerland, time is required because of the existence of certain legal regulations. You are probably aware that historically Switzerland has been very cautious in permitting the a3s of tetraethyl lead and continued to demonstrate reluctance to do so long after the use of tetraethyl lead was widespread in other countries. Although in recent years the data accumulated in Switzerland and elsewhere have tended to overcome this viewpoint, it is not surprising that the Swiss .authorities have indicated an intention to proceed with considerable deliberation in relation to TML. we have no information indicating that.the use of 3?ML is liftsly ultimately to ue refused in Switzerland. Me have not dropped our participation or interest in the obtaining of medical clearance for *TML in Switzerland or in any other area. On the contrary, tie are continuing actively to carry forward the program in all areas where the use of TiC. is under consideration, Dr. Eehoe did not visit Austria on his trip because at that time no refiner had indicated an interest in that country, When your representative recently advised us of your interest in that area, we promptly initiated action to carry out the necessary discussions 0003123 * * 3. with radical authorities, I am pleased to advise that the appropriate discussions have now been held in Austria and the sale in that country of gasoline containing requires no further clearance* . 2 hope the above answers your questions.
