Hie Vinyl Institute presented its top safety award for 1987 to Jchn T. Barr and Air Products & Chemicals Inc., Allentown, PA. The award recognizes Barr, recently retired manager -- regulatory response at Air Products, for the company's contributions to standards-setting and safety organizations, presentations before government regulatory agencies, and authorship of technical bulletins relating to health effects and safe use and handling of vinyl chloride. The Institute also presented its annual worker safety awards in recognition of member company achievement in the area of OSHA's recordable incidence rate. The BFGoodrich Company, second place in the VCM/EDC category for a 0.78 OSHA recordable rate at its LaPorte, TX plant. Occidental Chenical Corporation, first place in the IVC category for 0.76 OSHA recordable rate at its Pasadena, TX plant. Vista Chenical Company, second place in the IVC category for a 0.81 OSHA recordable rate at its Aberdeen, MS plant. Both Dow and Goodrich won their respective awards for the second year in a rcw. Environmental achievorient awards were newly inaugurated by the Institute this year to recognize performance in controlling and minimizing VCM emissions. The award is modeled on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants. The best score possible is 100.
