Ue are quoting below lob Kimpton*s remarks on his tank cleaning report dated June 12, 1954 covering tank ho. 22, 21,000 bbl. capacity, for Esso Standard Oil Co*, Ithaca, II*X* This tank was cleaned on June 11th. aixd the tests in his remarks were made the same day.
"To make a lead-in-air analysis of this tend:, I used Elmwood Electricfs safety equipment. .Soon after I placed the mask on,the air coming through the hose burned my nose and eyes. I was in the tank about fifteen minutes getting a sample of - air, all during this tine my eyes burned. Then 1 came out of the tank, I mentioned my experience to hr. Trickey. he said the air coming out of the hose burned his nose and eyes when he was in the tame, but he said nothing to me until I mentioned it.
hr. keager also said there was something burning his face, after he came out cf the tank, he mentioned the condition after he had been in the tank about two hours. Hhy he said nothing about it before or why he stayed in the tank while the air burned his skin is not known to me.
Due to the irritating air coming from the hose and the smell of decom posed product, I decided to :.mke a lead-in-air test of the air coming from the hose. Ir air test shelved a reading of between 12 & 15 micrograms.
As soon as I got this reading, I called our Hr. Baldwin in our- Hew York Office. He informed me he would be talking to Hr. C. Hitchcock, President of Elmwood Electric Company, Buffalo, H.Y. and infona him of our finding and suggest that he flush out the hose and make sure there was nothing in the hose to contaminate the air.
On Sunday, June 13th, Hr. Hitchcock called me asking for details on cur findings and reported to me that Hr. Russel Ileager had called him report ing he was feeling ill and running a temperature. I called our Hr. Bald win and reported my conversation from Hr. Hitchcock to him. He suggested I call Hr. Hitchcock Sunday evening to find out how Hr. Heager was feeling.
After noon Sunday, our. Hr. Baldwin called me, asking that I call Hr. Hitchcock and have him give us for cur inspection the three lengths of

he said we could have the hose for our Inspection. I trill pick up the hose and send it to our Hew York office, as soon as possible. A follow up on this report will follow."
Under Item 27, on the face of the tank cleaning report, Bob has shown (2) as the reading for the airline hose test. I am sure thi3 is an error since his verbal report and remarks gave the reading as 12 to 15.

lob Kimpton picked up four lengths of hose Holiday morning dune 14th, and took them home, /ifter they had been in the sun it his back yard a couple of hours, he hooked them up to his mask blower and took another air sample which also showed between 12 and 15 .micrograms. lob then looked the hose over carefully and found one length that could be con sidered in poor condition. lie removed this section and made another test on the remaining three sections. The lead-in-air concentration was still between 12 and 15 micrograms.
I expect to be with Deb limday, June 21st, when we trill attempt to trash out one length and see if it can be cleaned. All hose will be retained and can be chipped to cur Helical Department if they wish to do further test work on it. die have promised to replace ary hose we retain, which is entirely satisfactory to Carl Hitchcock of Elmwood Tank Gleaners.
I talced with Cai'l Hitchcock on Honday, June 14th, and he reports that Hussell leaser had oily a cold and was back on the job. Carl had talced with Iiucsellts doctor who diagnosed his illness as a light cold.
Carl also reported that the sane crew was move on a tank cleaning job for Sun Oil at Eenova, best Virginia with duPont in attendance. Carl had
requested then to test the hose ccruimont on that job and found it to be OK.
Today, June '17th, George 0JCoimell is observing a tank cleaning job for Esso at Plattsburgh, 1J.Y. with another crew of 2Iitchcock*s. I asked George to test the air from the hose on that job which he did and got a reading off the scale of our analyser. He hooked up three lengths of "Ethyls" hose to contractors blower and sampled the air passing through it. It was practically a zero reading. George selected three or four lengths of contractor rs hose which the;/ said were the newest and had than
'washed thoroughly. 4 sample then indicated under 4 micrograas. Kcse vrill be rewashed and retested. The other lengths trill also be '.cashed and tested and pat back in service if and when they can be considered safe to use.
